TrekUnited Campaign Ends
ForteMaster writes "TrekUnited, the controversial campaign to save Enterprise from cancellation, has ended its campaign today. Interestingly enough, the article mentions that "a multiple of the money raised by TrekUnited so far" was being offered, with "further details to be released shortly". A case of counting the chickens before they've hatched, maybe? Here is some
commentary from TrekToday on the subject."
News for Nerds? Stuff that matters? Bah.
/., you'd think nerds are nothing but a bunch of fat people who sit at keyboards, watch screens and fear the physical world. Oh, wait a minute....
Whenever there's an article on new forms of transportation, energy, humans in space or other such physical activity, there are typically few posts relative to those discussing any of the space opera TV shows.
Worse, many of those posts are from chicken littles, predicting doomsday and pontificating in areas where clearly they have little expertise (let alone (not) RTFAs). I'd expect the so-called nerds here to at least understand relative risk and risk/benefit ratios.
Electic cars: "why don't they just make more efficient batteries? CONSPIRACY!"
Flying cars: "They might fall on my house!"
Human space activity: "Waste of money (and they might fall on my house)!"
Solar sails: "They might fry my house!"
Wind turbines: "They kill birds (hmm, wonder if they can fall on my house)!"
Dams: "They ruin rivers (and they might.., never mind)!"
Nuclear: do I really need to give an example here?
But whenever there's some change/threat to a ridiculous TeeVee space opera - whoa, out they come - more posts, more serious, more informed.
From the examples here on
Seriously, I know I'm generalizing, but it seems people here value space soaps more than reality. Mark me down as flamebait, but surely I'm not the only one who sees this.
