GCC 4.0.0 Released

busfahrer writes "Version 4.0.0 of the GNU Compiler Collection has been released. You can read the changelog or you can download the source tarball. The new version finally features SSA for trees, allowing for a completely new optimization framework." The changelog is pretty lengthy, and there's updates for every language supported from Ada to Java in addition to the usual flavors of C.

    Nice troll.

However note (this is for the grandparent to) - it isn't Visual Studio.NET - It's Visual Studio 2005.

Why we you using it in the first place?
Seems like your mistake really. Anyways the reason why it is slower is because well there is no use for it any more. It use was mainly to get around some deficiencies in the optimizers.

The OpenBSD crowd had a lot of concerns about bugs in 3.x and performance regressions (in compiling, not in the resulting binaries).

The OpenBSD team want to build their own "free" C compiler because they don't like the GPL.

I really hope they try. It will be quite entertaining and should knock them down a peg or two.

They might be able to produce an over simplified version of NTP with ease, but I think producing a full compiler suite with about one and a half developers is going to be a bit more than they can handle. Should be fun to watch though.

And just for the record, I do use OpenBSD. It's just unfortunate that it's mostly produced by assholes.
