Third Parties Already Taking Advantage of Tiger

tezbobobo writes "Tiger been out hours and already the Apple download page has been updated to take advantage of the update's new features. These cover areas including Spotlight plugins, Dashboard plugins, and Automator plugins. These allow a range of actions from searching within omnigraph documents (spotlight), to resizing photoshop documents (automator), and (my fav) a dashboard wireless locator. The best bit -- a cursory glance indicates about half are freeware."

It seems to me that whenever I hear about some great new Mac software, it ends up being some prettified version of something that:

    a)already exists
b)has no reason to exist in the first place

I mean, seriously. How much Mac software is the equivalent of "faceplates for your cell phone?"

And yes, I know that there is all kinds of that crap for Windows and Linux, too. But in the Mac world, it really seems to be the focus of a lot of attention.

      I completely agree.

As a Mac OSX 10.3 user - I see nothing in this new version of the OS that is going to be even remotely useful. I am already able to use my computer to do work in an efficient manner. I'm puzzled and confused as to why Apple continues to fragment their userbase like this (the answer being: profit - they get their users to repeatedly buy what is effectively the same OS).

These new features in Tiger seem to be the equivalent of a bunch of new Powertoys - and nothing more. It's certainly not worth the $130 price that they're asking (I've been able to get Windows XP OEM for close to that price for at least two years - and all the equivalent functionality is free). For example:

      * Spotlight isn't unique - Google Desktop search or Yahoo Desktop search do the exact same things on Windows for the price of $0.

      * Quicktime 7 - note that they still want to charge for the "Pro" version. The Quicktime player (as included in Mac) and has always been a free download on Windows (Quicktime will be slaughtered in the marketplace if they *ever* charge for it).

      * Safari & Mail - I can't believe they have the gall to charge for upgrades to their substandard web browser and mail program. Firefox and Thunderbird are infinitely more usable and professional. Last time I tried to use it, Mail couldn't even support multiple email addresses! How 1990!

      * Dashboard - It's nothing that Stardock's Object Desktop hasn't been able to do for about a year. However, it's my experience that silly desktop toys like this are more of a drain on productivity than a benefit. A desktop should be simple, nonintrusive - and let you get on with your work.

Regardless what Apple does, we will see Apple users praising features that other operationg systems
had implemented for a long time. The Steve Jobs effect, marketing, a product designer + apple community, and a crappy music player without a colour display will be cool....

It's all about rationalising decision, and what silly arguments you will find:
    - Mac OS X was a Unix and based on open source technology
    - Mac OS X had good usability
    - Power PC processors are better
    - Having a restricted set of devices you can use with Macs is great and we like to pay more for the same technology.
    - outer appearance of hardware matters
    - Intel user are too common people

Well, I would not object Softpear but Apple Mac OS X, you know, I just do not like the community. I do not want to belong to the exclusive club.

I recently learned of Konfabulator -- a shareware version of Dashboard -- and tried out the Windows version. Very well done.

I don't know the details about Konfabulator and Apple, but it would be sad if Apple did lift off the idea so blatantly without due credit. I hope at the very least the Konfabulator guys get more attention from this. Maybe the Apple market is gone but the Windows market might grow because of this.
