Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race Photos

YetAnotherName writes "Tom Jones again has coverage and plenty of eye candy of the Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race, where engineering prowess converges with a sense of humor. Check out what bizarre contraptions for 2005 won awards for Best Engineering, Best Art, Best Bribes, etc., and if anyone actually finished the race."

For anyone at work on this fine Saturday, be advised that the link in the summary labeled "coverage and plenty of eye candy" is not safe for my work, and likely many others.

I found out the hard way - it would be better to put a disclaimer in the summary.

The whole thing was hilarious. Specially the "It cain't" titanic parody, and my favorite, La Kafkaracha. For those not spanish-savvy, 'la cucaracha' means "the cockroach" in spanish. It's also a famous traditional song in Mexico. (Ironically, the song is about a cockroach not being able to walk because it's missing a leg).

La kafkaracha's face was very funny, too!

There is a picture of what appears to be a papier mache turtle or tortoise about halfway down the page. This construes a clear violation of company policy, as we believe that all creatures were created by god, and any effigy of a creature (ie. created by man & science) is an abomination against christ.

This site is only not safe for work if you happen to work for some kind of totalitarian mothers against everything company.

While entering the water at Canton, the Westward Ho train lost control on the wet ramp and over several seconds skidded into the rocks, and apparently also into a young boy, who started screaming, "I'm gonna die!" While the Coast Guard called for an ambulance, the boy's father was eventually located, and a physician on the scene conducted a brief examination after which the boy was well enough to walk away. Please exercise due caution when attending races of any sort.

I became familiar with the race from Arcata to Ferndale, California when I went to school there.

I'm not certain how long Baltimore's been doing it, but the Arcata race has been going for 37 years.

watched it from the canton waterfront park....its a shame that it rained all day (and I was looking forward to seeing the train enter the water)

for those that plan on visiting baltimore, i highly suggest checking out the American Visionary Musuem (http://www.avam.org/ which sponsored this race...its a musuem full of art by non-trained artists. has some really great stuff.

I can just imagine the train verrrrrry slowly sliding on its side down the ramp into the water, while some boy is standing in front of the sliding train for several seconds watching as it slides towards him, not moving an inch, and then suddenly screaming "I'm gonna die!!!" when it barely touches him, and then the coast guard whips into action, beaching their 40 foot cutter in the 2 inch deep water next to the ramp to save the boy, calling for ambulances to race in and make sure that the boy's scraped knee is not life-threating.
