Desktop Linux Usage Statistics
Ahkorishaan writes "Desktoplinux.com has put up their December 2004 survey results. Debian has fallen from their top rank as preferred Linux distro, and newcomers Thunderbird and Firefox have an impressive showing in their respective genres."
Hi, all you hot sexy Linux d00dz!!! Wanna cyber?
Isn't that the distro by the dude who thought he was dying, but it turned out he was just a pussy.
Shut the fuck up, you rude bastard.
So that's still terribly inaccurate, but proves the point: Obviously, the non-commercial distros are strongly underrated in the study.
Mandriva ( mandrake new name ) as destroyed SUSE in europe ( and all over the world ) thats why suse whas sold by IBM who acquired it in 2000 after they where financially bankrupt , in 2004 to Novell , because even IBM whas fed up to pick up the tab.

Red Hat is another story , they have betrayed the entire GNU/Linux community by forgetting who build them and really financed them and created Red Hat by going Commercial only and making Fedora unsuported , fedora also split there community in two , they lost for many there Leaders place as if they have given up on the desktop , Dont forget that Red Hat whas given 3.2 Billion with the goal of Building GNU/Linux for us all , if they cant make GNU/Linux on the desktop with 3.2 billion and needed to borrow another 500 milion in debenture owed in 2024 , there is a serious Problem at Red Hat , just so you got something to compare Dell whas built with 50 million. Dont forget that in the past Mandriva ( then Mandrake ) as held the title of #1 in sale and whas recorded at surpassing since its creation in download Red Hat , this is mostly due to the fact that Mandriva support more language by default then Red Hat does.
Mandriva problem whas/is its management , the lack of clear Leadership ( Gaël Duval as got is own creation stolen from him , he is no longer the #1 share older and dont even make the top 15 ) , the obvious lack of defense of the product when people are lying about its real state , the product are winning every competition they enter, and wich are fair ( a lot of review use a previous version of Mandrake againts the best and last flagship of the others ).
But do not make the mistake to underestimate Mandriva , it as a solid base of paying user a community who are whilling to pay and created there own club in order to support ther distribution and they are now joined by Conectiva.
Mandriva will eventually assume the lead , as even when they where in trouble they never strayed from there goal , giving a free GNU/linux complete solution for all.

I like gnome, and despite what the popular opinion might be it's far better in usability in a lot of areas. It just doesn't have as many bells and whistles. Basically, gnome : mac :: kde : windows, which could also explain why it's not so popular.
Take for example dual screen support. The last KDE I tried (3.4) had the option of one continuous bar extending across both screens, so windows in the bar are usually on the wrong screen (where it spills over one screen, the buttons are just cut in half). KDE also had the 'option' of having exactly one window list in the entire display. This from a C++, object-oriented environment? Meanwhile in gnome I can have as many bars as I want and the windows move from lists to list dynamically as they are dragged between screens.
And you know what, this lack of usability for KDE is pervasive. Putting the kmix? into the taskbar and the default is like 20 miniture mixer controls, which look retarded and are very difficult to use. The volume control is similar, where in kde you get like maybe 20 pixels of range (depending on your bar size) whereas in gnome you click and get a popup slider so you can actually set the volume accurately. And the stock performance monitor in gnome shows a history instead of a vertical, rainbow colored bar showing the last sample. And it goes on and on like that.
So sure KDE has more bells and whistles and gnome does have its many flaws, but KDE just doesn't have that nice elegant feel to it; it feels like a bunch of hacks. And I didn't get into linux just for a free, better version of Windows.
