Microsoft 'under attack' On All Fronts

khujifig writes "The Beeb are carrying a story looking at the challenges facing Microsoft in the next few years. This includes a brief description of the M.Home (sans Clippy) which the Beeb describes as "a far cry from real life", and a discussion of the next few years competition for Microsoft. They go on to highlight Linux, OpenOffice.org, the GIMP and Firefox (which Gates himself has used: "I played around with it a bit, but it's just another browser, and IE [Microsoft's Internet Explorer] is better,"), and look Apple in relation to Longhorn. Not as bad a read as I was expecting. Their summary: Microsoft is under 'attack' on all fronts, and either needs to innovate or die. "Why use Microsoft if you have a broadband connection and combine Firefox with powerful web services like Google's Gmail?."" It should be said, tho', that articles like this have been written about MSFT for a long time - and there's still billions in their war-chest.

Looks like Bill will have to redouble his virus release efforts to exploit all of his competitors flaws. I wonder how long its been since he has coded.

Then firefox has failed. Firefox was meant to be "Just a Browser" , not the "An Application Platform by itself" Mozilla route. That is the what it was meant to do - and it sure does.

Is that why it regularly consumes well over 100MB of RAM and more than triples what I've seen from any other browser?

Whats more rediculous is that there is an entire community of nerds that isn't satisfied just making software and letting people use it - they have to defeat the big, bad evil Microsoft and devote hours of their time to talking about it. Give me a break people. Microsoft is just some company, its not the anti-christ. Its annoying and the only people who really care are these software elitists that make people not want to even download anything like Firefox. Linux will never be better than Windows and Firefox will never be better than IE until you start recognizing that they both in many ways have a superior interface. Instead, you people blindly convince each other that the products you use are superior, when in fact, you are some 5% minority on the entire planet. Until then you are doomed to tell yourself "what you want to hear" for eternity

what? Windows? I haven't heard of that console before.

Oh, you mean that tiny little area of EB, marked 'PC' that's much smaller than the PS2 and XBox sections, and about the same size as the Gamecube one.

Sorry, PC Gamers are a specialist market. Like Linux users.

Many folk who are specialist in their OS choice are general in their gaming platform. Ie, when I want a PC, I use Linux like the long haired GNU freak I am (oh wait, I work a corporate job). When I game, I use a console like normal people.
