Teacher Fired for P2P Lecture
An anonymous reader writes "A teacher at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, was forced to resign after a talk about P2P networks. You can read his side of the story on his blog." From the article: "The day before the conference, the Dean (pressured by the Spanish Recording Industry Association 'Promusicae' as I found out later, and he recognized himself in a quote to the national newspaper El Pais, and even the Motion Picture Association of America, as another newspaper quotes) tried to stop it by denying permission to use the scheduled venue. So I scheduled a second one, and that was denied again. And a third time. Finally I gave the conference on the university cafeteria, for 5 hours, in front of 150 people." Commentary on this story at BoingBoing as well.
MODS: Just because you disagree with something does NOT mean you mod it down! The parent is NOT trolling, he is expressing his opinion. Just because somene disagrees with the story does not mean his is trolling.
Recently I was attempting to deliver a lecture on "The 50s housewife as a High Watermark in Female Accomplishment" and my follow-on lecture "Feminists: why each man should own at least one" to the Womyn's (Stud)ies program at UCLA.
I could see no possible adverse repercussions from this.
I very clearly expressed the need for this lecture to the director of the department but she seemed hesitant. Specifically I said: "There there li'le Missy. No need to worry your pretty little head about this".
Strangely she became somewhat distressed. I proceeded with the lecture in spite of the department's misgivings. 150 women attended the lectures. I very carefully determined that their fathers or husbands had allowed them to attend. Towards the end of the second lecture, the attendees, and many others who had wandered in, became very aggitated. I was forced, yes FORCED to quit the stage!
Right now I am updating my blog wirelessly from inside a barricaded "powder room" with thousands of enraged feminists outside. This is blatant disrespect for Academic Freedom of Speech and I except the world to rally to my defense! CRASH! -ARGGHH!
