FTC Recommends ISPs Disconnect Spam Zombies
Mike Markley writes "CNN is carrying a story about the the FTC's plans and concerns around spam zombies. They say they will be identifying such zombie hosts and notifying ISPs, and are recommending that the ISPs disconnect indicated users. There's also a recommendation likely to raise the ire of the geekier sorts: that ISPs only permit users to send mail through their own servers (presumably by blocking port 25 outbound)." From the article: "Law enforcers in 25 other countries, from Bulgaria to Peru, are also participating in the campaign, the FTC said. Absent from the list of cooperating countries was China, where experts say rapid growth and a relative lack of technical sophistication have led to a large number of zombie computers."

Hear! Hear! Running your own services generally means less work for the provider. I've only ever called in when I first start a service, because their settings on the DSL line were wrong. I was the one providing the tech support for their tech support personnel to get things fixed on their end. They should pay us for our support of their support personnel.
Once I'm properly connected, I'm providing my own service. I only call in afterwards if they lose my connection. During those times, they always ask me which version of windows I use and I know enough to pretend to walk through windows and provide the proper answers to get the right results. I wish ISPs would support Linux or understand enough linux to know that I don't need to have Windows or Mac to connect to the internet. Damn idiotic tier1 support. If they knew what they were doing, I wouldn't have to waste 10 minutes with them to get to the tier2 tech I always end up needing to fix the problem on their end. Usually, I have to pretend I'm following their instructions to produce the answers I already gathered, before I called them. This requires pausing a moment before providing the results, or they'd get suspiscious. Luckily, this is a rather rare experience, unlike when DSL first rolled out and I was the first on the block to get it. 10 calls in the first two months, because they were still working out the bugs and fine tuning the network.
At least they gave me 6MB down and 1.5 MB up for my first two years. They finally capped me when everyone else started signing on. It was great while it lasted back then. Too bad there weren't as many videos back then.
