An employee suggested to me that we buy Winamp for few offices here as an evaluation. I was skeptical at first but he explained the benefits of using it for our employee's day-to-day music listening and relaxation. So I decided to let him install Winamp (and this plug-in for IPod I think) into 5 offices to see how the employees got on. Besides, our IT manager had been using Winamp in his office and it seemed to work fine, why not try it on the client offices?

Once he'd got Winamp up and running with the IPods we let the users try it out. It all seemed fine to start with: Winamp was a pretty good replacement for ITunes and the users could still do their work as normal.

Alas it did not stay that way. After a few days, I had lost count of the number of complaints received from users who could not find things they were used to (like the classification of songs) or tasks they could not perform that they previously could with the pen and paper. The constant crashes began to make using Winamp a burden on our office mp3s. The final straw came when one employee lost several hours of work when Winamp suddenly had an error writing to his IPod and corrupted his album of Spice Girls.

Needless to say, the Winamp team offered no support whatsoever. I made the employee remove Winamp from the offices and lets just say he's not with us anymore.

Glad I bought another music player, then. It acts just like a drive, and I copy files to and from it as I please. It also plays Ogg!

That 'news' was covered like ages ago on every singe damned blog out there.... slashdot, news for trolls and stuff that's crap.

How about covering real news? Like the fact that Google is hiring Neo-cons to run the company?

Oh, right. Slashdot accepts advertising revenue from Google, and Google in turn features Slashdot feeds on their new portal page. So let's not go there.

No, let's talk about the 999th inane piece of code that lets you play music instead. That's so much more important.

Maybe timothy can post a dupe on this story. I bet he does. Who wants to take that bet?

I simply plugged it into my Windows XP laptop and it worked--no software to install. Just press the "sync" button from Windows Media player 10.

You understand it can play MP3s, right?

Tell that to the 95% of iPod users who don't even know what DRM is and ripped with the default settings. They are locked into Apple for life, or until they re-encode all of their music. Which is not likely to happen.

The iPod is everything the /. crowd hate about the RIAA and all the other companies that want to "0wn" music. The fact that it is accepted, relished ever, is due to the fan boys. Something any /.'er should be used to, but the iPod support still surprises me.

It sucks on every level that normally matters to geeky people, and it excels for those who would normally buy Louis Viton bags. All image. Suxors! :-)

Just because you have an iPod doesn't mean you have to use iTMS.

What? You can't even install the free Quicktime Player without getting iTunes forced on you. If that had been done by someone else, e.g. Microsoft, we'd all be up in arms. But it's apple, the company that takes from OSS but never gives. My only explination is that the iPod adverts must work really well, because they've got the /. crowd hooked.
