Morpheus is Dead
MTV Games is reporting that the latest live event in the Matrix Online has permenantly changed the topology of The Matrix: Morpheus is dead. From the article: "Morpheus' demise was not without controversy. In the days leading up to it, the developers' live team, who orchestrate the game's big monthly story-advancing moments, carried out a Wachowski-Chadwick plot that had Morpheus, in the words of some users, 'turning terrorist.' According to storyline, Morpheus wanted to reclaim the body of the fallen Neo, which was being held by the Matrix's machine overlords. Morpheus tried to pressure cooperation by planting bombs throughout the Matrix infrastructure."
Neo died at the end of the third movie, so that one is not surprising. As far as killing off Morpheus goes, I think it is a great idea. If they had maintained the status quo, it would have just been The Matrix Revolutions Continues. This insures that it will stay somewhat fresh and start its OWN STORYLINE
Part of the original plan for TMO was to keep the story going with actors and writers moving the overhead of the game. I hope this works.
Although I don't play this game (or any other MMOs for that matter) I have a feeling that Morpheus will be back.

Actually no. Even before they launched the game I remember reading an article saying they would kill off a major character a few weeks after the release. It was either Morpheur, Persephone or the Merovingian.
I remember reading in the 'Star Trek:TNG' Compendium that each time the writers wanted to do a major shakeup of the status quo, they were rebuffed by the corporate types who were afraid that to shake things up too much would result in having to send their children to in-state colleges versus Harvard or Yale or ASU.
It is refreshing to see that the Washchsocoicococki Brothers were willing to do something dramatic for story's sake instead of just keeping things like they were in the movie.
Funny how you cited Obi Wan as a comparison, even though I he dies within the first half of the first movie of the original trilogy.
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with the company in any way, I have no insider information, and since I'm a Slackware guy, I can't even play the game. Therefore, this is ONLY a wild-ass guess.
I've looked over their website, I've read the news they put up about the assassination, and I have a theory (which seems kind of obvious to me).
They say the assassin can tinker with the matrix like Neo used to (although they didn't make that comparison, which I found telling).
The machines have not released Neo's body.
Morpheus was trying to pressure them to release Neo's body by blowing stuff up, or otherwise causing all kinds of problems.
An assassin with a porcelain mask pops out of a small vent and kills Morpheus. This directly benefits the machines (and by extension everybody else).
Conclusion:
The assassin is either Neo himself brought back to life, or a clone of Neo with updates.
If it's Neo, maybe he's missing some of his memories and believes he's acting in the greater good.
If it's a clone, maybe it's the first in a new line of unstoppable agents based on Neo.
OR, it could be Neo brought back to life but still infected with some part of Smith, thus completely bonkers and a new enemy in the game?
Just a theory...
Farewell! It's been a fine buncha years!
In the Enter the Matrix game, when you summon all the ships for the meeting that takes place at the beginning of Reloaded, you leave a message on a answering machine with Laurence Fishburne saying "You have reached the Daniel Institute of Dream Interpretation."
Which was kind of neat.
Kind of.
