vitaly.friedman writes "Bookmarks for web-developers, a list of useful tools supposed to make the life of web-workers easier, includes over 500 manually selected resources, tutorials, references and examples related to web-development. The "Web-Dev-Bookmarks" also includes links to other catalogs and lists related to web-design and web-development."

    This is most obvious Slashvertisement ever... theres not even any content/review. + I must say the book seems totally useless to any serious developer.

      I appreciate your criticism and your opinion; however, I just cant understand one small, tiny, little thing: ok, such directories arent perfect, they are subjective and they arent the masterpieces made by abandoned genius(es?). But if at least a hundred of users make use of it, then they actually ARE useful for them, arent they? Ok, you are a professional, you dont need that; but many people do - would it be better if such a directory didnt exist? Frankly, I dont think so. You?

      Now few words about your points.

      Am I asking you to pay for the content? Is it a commercial resource? Is it an advertisement?

      We could talk about it. What exactly should be added? What exactly do you mean?

      Well, maybe it isn't good enough for you, but it is good enough for visitors which are thankful for creating this list. And for me, it's the only thing that counts, really.

      First of all, if you would follow the link you might have found out that the web-site which is linked in the article isn't my own blog, but is just the project "Web-Dev-Bookmarks".

      Besides, I don't see any problem in announcing my web-site which might be useful for web-developers.

      As you might have read in the introduction, I created this list (initially) for my purposes. As a web-designer and a member of some lets call it web-design-groups, I need those tools mentioned in my list practically every day. I dont want to create 40 icons in my Opera Toolbar; neither am I interested in spending hours for searching for the right links, Ive seen once, moved to my bookmarks and forgot about the moment I did it.

      I wanted to have a list, which was accessible, useful and essential. I created it for myself, for my work and for my fellows web-developers I work with. But since other users might have been interested in the project as well, I invested a little bit more time (4-5 days) in order to give them the opportunity to make use of it. Whats wrong with that? At least, you could appreciate the time I invested in it.
      And, besides, may I ask what do you mean with "Ye gods, this is lame"?

      I guess nobody clicked on the link. I dunno, there were some interesting things there, but not a single ad or anything other than a paypal logo. The guy clearly made this without really thinking about step 3, next time will you at least read TFA, or the in this case, TFS. For what it is worth it was likely published on slashdot because, well, I'm sure someone might find it useful. Gotta love the irony of a guy putting together what he thinks is useful information, decides to share such information and then gets quickly attacked by the community that he is attempting to reach out to, with claims of a for-profit motive. Speaking of which, when did trying to make money suddenly become an immediate sign of evil? You *do* need money to live you know, right? Is everyone here like a communist or something? For fuck's sake. I'm gonna post this as AC, just so I can mod your stupid ass comment down.

      The problem is not this article or site. Last year, or merely a few months ago, this article would simply been one of the bunch, and seen as a valuable and readworthy contribution.

      Today, however, we have at least 1 Google article a day, and now there's a shameless plug everyday as well. Meanwhile, people submitting serious articles get "REJECTED" notices. That is what is wrong with this article.

      Example: An SUV is a good car, if there are only a few. Once half of the cars are SUVs, they become an annoyance.

      He sure as fuck didnt spend 4-5 days prettying up his bookmarks file and then submitting it as a "story"

      Its not the first time some not very special thing like this has been posted as a story lately. It might be nice if the editors THOUGHT about what was in the que before they put just any old crap on the site??

      I can definately see why he might be a little put-out at how much they seem to have lowered the bar around here lately

      I was trying to be funny and at the same time to to address what I see as a problem in Slashdot's recent decline in newworthiness and timeliness. It seems all too easy lately to get any old thing posted as front-page news on this site. Apparently nobody else got the joke, either.

      I did look at your site. There's nothing wrong with it, but it is IMO fairly ordinary as such things go, and I have at least a dozen similar listings in my bookmarks.

      Nothing personal, but I certainly don't think that it ranks up there with opening the source to an operating system, releasing a new version of a popular programming language, etc. It's just Not News, and the fact that the editors would consider it such is what's lame. That this topic only got about 20 posts should speak to that fairly handily. Sorry -- and call me petty if you will -- but that's what I honestly think.

      Very nicely done Vitaly and not only added to my bookmarks but my field book as well for handing out to those that ask (all to many!) for a guide. Normally I have to find these through following the sig-block links but on a slow news day, as today seems, I don't mind at all seeing this show up as an article. Besides, this one beats the all too frequently out of date Google directory hands down. The "love" shows. Keep up the good work.

      Hmm... Well, Google might serve as an ultimate resource for finding web-developers' tools, but how much time would it take to find, lets say five essential ressources you've lost in the jungle of your bookmarks folder? Or five really useful color tools? If you ask Google for "color tool" I am not sure that you'll get what you want. You?

      If users find a resource useful, they might have bookmarked it, but they might have lost it in their bookmarks as well. But if, once these resources are needed, Google responds to a query "CSS web-development references list" with a direct link to direct references, its useful after all, isnt it?

    I'm always looking for good aggregators. Yes I can hit google myself, but the web is so big.... and of course if there is one thing on the web it is stuff about web development. So the volume can be overwhelming. I'll be happy to start perusing this site and see if it does a good job of finding worthwhile sites and saving me the time and effort of wading through the junk.

    The guy may have submitted his own site, but can you blame him? I don't. And I don't see anywhere he is asking for money from me. So if it is useful I'll be glad for it. And honestly-- how can this be any worse than a tutorial on pumping ice water through copper tubing tied to a fan?

    For me one of the most important things in a web is that it follow the standards so it can reach more people.

    I've been checking and I've not find any link to the latest versions of the standards.

    A web page for web developers must have a big & easy to find link to the actual standards and then some other links to tutorials, tips, etc...

      Any web developer should already know where to find the standards. The material was intended to be a handbook.

      The standards are almost unreadable, anyways-- no need to use them unless its an emergency!

      You mean like this one: HTML or this one? XHTML, or this? XML Okay, I think I've made my point. If not try, just about any other category because if it doesn't open with the definitive/authoritative, spec or recommendation, there isn't one. I guess now I'm the one adving my own site, so jump all over me. Peace!

    W3schools.com is good, but I've learnt to doublecheck anything they say with actual standards because they do tend to be more MS-centric, IMO.
