Integrated Circuit Inventor Jack Kilby Dead at 81

geekotourist writes " Jack Kilby , inventor of the integrated circuit, one winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics (Robert Noyce died in 1990), died June 20th after a brief battle with cancer. In 1958 he invented the foundation for a trillion dollar industry as a substitute for going on vacation." Update: 06/22 02:03 GMT by T : Kilby was 81, not 91 as the headline originally indicated.

    I think that the present lack of comments on this article, combined with the subject matter of this article, speaks volumes about the so-called Slashdot community.

    You must be Indian or Chinese, for you certainly act like one.

    The grandparent article is spot on. American society is not perfect, but people here tend to be more honest than those in China or India. Only a Chinese or an Indian would claim that all cultures are equally honest. B*llsh*t. One of the reasons that Japan succeeded is that its people are phenomenally honest; even "The New York Times" documented this honesty.

    Moreover, the University of Illinois in 1947 was a very average university. The University of Wisconsin was an agricultural university. Those very plain schools were the sources of Kilby's education.

    Kilby did not graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology, which is all the rage among Indians. Kilby did not work 12 hours per day. He worked a very 9-to-5 job just like his peers and had time to help his community. (Indians brag that they have the "competitive spirit" to work 15 hours per day and to reap $150,000 salaries and laugh at the illegal Mexican aliens who can barely earn enough to survive.) Unlike the Indians and the Chinese, his children were all daughters, and he treated them well.

    Awesome.

    Some "hick" from Kansas creates an industry that is worth $1 trillion, and he works normal hours and spends quality time with his daughters. Meanwhile, Indian/Chinese H-1Bs from elite private schools abort female babies, brag about how great Indian/Chinese society is, but fight with tooth-and-nail to live in a society created by us dumb "hick" Americans.

    I love the irony.
