bahree writes "Google now has officially released their API's for Google Maps; till now there were a few hacks in place such as my where I work, but now its all supported. You would need to get a key, which is associated with a specific url, you can get that here and also read up on all the fun details here." CT: Sorry for the dupe. Sure, Google is today the golden success story of the internet, and is everyone's favorite company, not least because of it's appealing "do no evil" philosophy and clean, utilitarian site design.

Still, the sad fact is, Google's days are numbered.

You see, Google has put all its eggs, as it were, in a single basket, one woven out of their effective and innovative search algorithm (you can think of text ads as the handle of this basket).

The problem then is, as searching becomes more and more fast and effective, there will soon come a time when we figure out exactly where everything is, and will no longer need to do all this searching.

When that time comes, Google's glory days will be over, just as the "Age of Discovery" ended when mankind figured out where all the continets were. Sic Google gloria transit.

    5. Google will release Stove APIs tomorrow (or later today at this rate)

    Ahh..

    you are uninformed.

Real systems seperate executable code and data effectively without resorting to things like NX.

Microsoft has this great idea with Windows 95 that things should be "document centric"; you don't open an application to print a document, you drag the document to the printer! Magic! Behind the scenes Windows will silently open the application, feed it the data, and a command telling it to print to the printer. Sounds good, but the problem is that (1) Windows can be told to perform a different action instead of "print" - all actions are created equal. (2) Windows can be told instead to execute the data as code, (3) the "correct application" can be changed, feeding your data to any old app that feels like it should register itself as the handler of that data type, etc.

So in the name conveince MS has created a gigantic system where any thing can be executed as code and nothing is truly data. Then they go and design a huge mass of file formats that contain both data and binary.
