Man Convicted For Hacking Xbox

PipianJ writes "Remember the ruling in Britain which outlawed mod chips last year? BBC News is reporting that a man has been convicted of modding an Xbox and sentenced to 140 hours of community service, a fine of 750 pounds (about $1300), and the confiscation of his PCs and Xboxes." From the article: "The man had been selling modified Xbox consoles which he fitted with a big hard drive containing 80 games. 'This case sets a major precedent which marks a milestone in the fight against piracy,' said games industry spokesman Michael Rawlinson." Wake up ... your country is slowly being turned into 1984-land. So slowly you don't notice ... first CCTV at every street corner, then identity cards, then outlawing what you're allowed to do with your own hardware, to serve megacorporate interests.

Judging from the TONE of your post, I don't think you should be allowed to have sharp things, let alone a handgun.

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

Huh I always thought that piracy refered to robbery committed or attempted on the high seas.

I guess you learn something new every day.

Who gives a flying fsck that this guy sold modded Xboxen. The authorities should be out there catching dangerous criminals instead of being the thought police. I for one do not give a shit about some corporation's bottom line. Eat flaming death, you corporate mongrels!

Why? Because, dude, about the only reason to chip is piracy so when you say 'chip' you are at the same time implying piracy. I don't care about the typical slashdot Nerd who looks for any alternative explanation (MAYBE HE JUST WANTED TO RUN LINUX ON HIS XBOX@!!!!). Chipping allows you to play games burned on DVDs you download from the internets. That's why people do it (in addition to getting a hard-drive full of games.)
