China Plans Deep Impact Mission
Comatose51 writes "China is planning its own Deep Impact mission. The goal of the mission, unlike the exploratory NASA project, is to push potential life-ending comets or asteroids away from a collision course with the earth." From the article: " The third nation to launch a man into space has lofty space ambitions that include putting two astronauts into orbit this September and eventually sending up a space station and even a manned mission to the moon."

This moderation is fascinating. It's "Flamebait", though no such mods register in its summary. And that summary shows a -1, not a zero score. Though the two opposing kinds of registered moderations should sum to zero effect, not the -3 effect on my original score of 2.
Of course, the replies weren't flames, none of the 14 direct ones. Or their further responses, in an interesting and lively discussion in which I learned some things. And what is "Flamebait", anyway? It's largely in the eye of the beholder, unless it's exclusively personal abuse. Flamers are responsible for noising the signal. Though there's no "Flame" mod.
This moderation escapade really shows the Slashdot moderation at its worst. And the continued abuse by moderators demonstrates the inadequacy of the metamoderation system. Slashdot is still fun and interesting, but it could be a lot better.
