The Behemoth Stirs

Game Informer has an interview with the folks at The Behemoth, makers of the incredible flash-game-to-console-hit title Alien Hominid. They're currently planning out their next project, which is as yet unnamed. From the article: "There's going to be a lot of homage's and tributes in here. But essentially, we're only allowed to say what you see right now with this new game. The idea is to save the princess, and every character has a different magical affinity. It's kind of like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with their weapons, sort of. One guy is ice, one guy is fire, one guy is lightning, and one guy is poison. You can shoot your sword, and then have the ability to do archery and magic. We're going to have it so the more you do something specific, the more you'll level that up - more powerful attacks and more powerful combos."

There is a link to the flash game.

And from personal experience, the musician behind the flash music is, and always will be, an asshole.

Well, the apostrophe used for plurality is one of my major pet peeves. I caught it when I first read the summary and rolled my eyes then thinking, "Is it really that difficult to comprehend?" So, I was in the right frame of mind for your "rebuttal".

Who thought Alien Hominid, at least the Flash version, wasn't actually all that great? The graphics are somewhat interesting and the plot gimmick is fun, but come on: if I want a side-scrolling shooter where the odds are stacked so desperately against me that level 2 is more a matter of divine intervention than skill then I'll just go play Metal Slug.

What's the deal /.'ers? Did I just not play long enough to get into it?

I've got the cube version, and it's actually a lot of fun. It reminds me a lot of Contra, actually, what with the bloody difficulty level and all. I know what you mean about level 2 ;) I did find that the cube version was a tad easier than the online flash version, if that's any consolation.

It certainly hasn't received any critical praise, and i've never once seen it listed in someone's top-10 list of great Gamecube games. Is someone just copy-pasting PR blather? I speak for all AC's when I say that i'm getting really annoyed with the slanted healines. What is this, FOXdot?

I rented the GC version and really really wanted to like it. I'm a fan of the old-school side-scrollers like Contra and Gunstar Heroes, so I figured this would be right up my alley.

An hour or so in, I felt my interest dropping. I liked the art style, and the gameplay was fine, but the two didn't work well together. It was really hard to dodge bullets that would get obscured by hand-drawn explosion sprites. The "PDA" minigames were cute, but again, largely didn't really pull me in.

Again, I really wanted to like it, since I'm always rooting for the indy game dev, but in this case, I just had to pass. I did, however, show my support and bought the Alien Hominid action figurines from the Behemoth's website. Perhaps I'll like their next game more...
