Digital Cameras Force Film Off Dixons' Shelves

ngibbons writes "BBC News story regarding digital camera sales: 'High Street retailer Dixons, which started by selling 35mm cameras, is to stop stocking the items because of the popularity of digital cameras.' Digital cameras will out-sell 35mm cameras in the UK by a ratio of 15:1 this year."

Slashdot Top Tips Presents: How to shaft PC World and get Free Stuff

Particularly useful for those of us who like to upgrade their home and work kit at the same time so they don't end up with different keyboards / mice / whatever. Extra tasty if your employer will reimburse you for this sort of thing.

    1. Buy new toy. eg. Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer
    2. Take new toy home; put old toy (eg. knackered filthy two-year-old Microsoft PS/2 mouse) in new box. Don't worry if it doesn't quite fit, or clearly doesn't resemble the picture on the box. The person you're going to be talking to won't notice, and even if they did, they're not being paid enough to care.
    3. Take old mouse in new box back to PC World, with receipt. Complain it doesn't work properly - can you swap it for another one, please?

    Et voila - free mouse!

Also works with webcams and joysticks. Might even work with flatscreen monitors if you can work out a way of getting your old CRT into the new box... ?

I have been a professional photographer for the last 22 years. These digital cameras are simply a fad and I am sorry that consumers lack the knowledge and are believing the mass marketing about these things. Film cameras give undisputably the highest quality of image. If you have the talent to take good pictures like myself, then the ability to take hundreds is of no consquence. I can take 3-5 good shots with my high quality film and I will blow away any crummy digital camera.

If anyone is seriously considering buying a digital camera, then I suggest you do some research and buy a top quality film camera instead. You may also want to consider buying the photo paper and chemicals to setup a blackroom in your house to develop the film.
