VG Vixens Return To Playboy

Chris Morris talks virtual nudity in his latest Game Over column, as videogame characters return to the pages of Playboy magazine. From the article: "[Game characters to be featured in the magazine hail from] Midway's upcoming 'Blitz: The League', Sony's megahit 'God of War,' Vivendi's '50 Cent: Bulletproof,' 'Playboy: The Mansion - Private Party,' 'Darkwatch,' and 'Hellgate: London'. While nude video game characters are nothing new for Playboy, the October issue hits stands just as the storm surrounding an unlockable sex scene in 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' begins to pass. The magazine said it never considered delaying the layout."

Probably because those aspects of male characters haven't been fleshed out (pardon my pun). When designing a female character, all of her dimensions have to be thought out ahead of time: chest, cup size, waist, hips, legs, and all of those drool-worthy dimensions, since most often her wardrobe is going to be designed to show off those dimensions. For male characters, a fair number of them are already bare chested, so there's nothing particularly new there. As for their endowment, that aspect of their anatomy is typically hidden. I'd wager the only thought given to the size of of it is by a graphics artist who uses his own judgement when he perhaps draws a characteristic bulge in his crotch. So when it comes time to do a playgirl spread, who decides how well endowed Gordon Freeman is? Is he jewish maybe? Is Duke Nukem taking steriods? Basically, to me it seems like doing a male spread is just adding penises for the sake of wanting to see digital wang, whereas doing a female spread is just showing the additional 10% of what they've already shown 90% of to us.

Print porn has been going down the tubes over the past decade as your average younger pornhound has easy access to free stills and video on the internet.

Laptops and handhelds (computers, not models or anything else!) are taking away one of the great advantages of print porn -- transportability.

Hef's company knows it needs to get some of the younger generations (i.e., 18-40) back into the (center)fold.

Playboy and Penthouse have always tried to get famous, beautiful, female personalities for their pictorials, from models to actresses to musicians to athletes to Miss America. Why shouldn't they have pictorials featuring modern famous, beautiful, female personalities, even if they are from video games?

Maybe Playboy can get some new people to appreciate all that print porn has to offer.

Even though massive amounts of filth to meet any perversion are available free on the internet, I still get a hardcopy subscription to Playboy for three reasons. I think enough people have similar reasoning and will continue to appreciate the glossy pages.

The first is that I really don't want a laptop while I'm sitting on the throne. I don't want an accident to happen to my laptop. Also, I don't want to use a laptop while it is actually on my lap too difficult to get comfortable. While PDA's and laptops are getting more and more portable, they'll never be quite right for the bathroom or the hammock in the yard.

The second is the articles, especially the fiction. I don't like reading for fun on a monitor. As the parent poster pointed out, the print edition also has special women, not available on the electronic version of the magazine.

The final reason is the collection. Can a teenage boy really browse your porn archive CD's in the basement? No. The wonderful stacks of Playboy with their (exactly) three pictorials are a treasure trove for a young man. I won't deny that to my son(s) when the time comes.

I would guess that the use of colons is to avoid having to add a numeral to the end of the game. Let's face it, if they had called "GTA: San Andreas" "GTA 5" (or whatever number we're up to) instead, how many people would avoid buying "GTA 4" because they think that a lower number must mean an inferior game? So, from a marketing standpoint, using colons makes perfect sense.
