Blackout Shows Net's Fragility

It doesn't come easy wrote to mention a ZDNet article discussing a recent outage between Level 3 Communications and Cogent Communication. A business feud inadvertently highlighted the fragility of the Internet's skeleton. From the article: "In theory, this kind of blackout is precisely the kind of problem the Internet was designed to withstand. The complicated, interlocking nature of networks means that data traffic is supposed to be able to find an alternate route to its destination, even if a critical link is broken. In practice, obscure contract disputes between the big network companies can make all these redundancies moot. At issue is a type of network connection called 'peering.' Most of the biggest network companies, such as AT&T, Sprint and MCI, as well as companies including Cogent and Level 3, strike "peering agreements" in which they agree to establish direct connections between their networks. Ask Slashdot.

We are currently designing two huge web services projects. The problem with them both is that they need to be available 24/7. Large backbone blackouts like this one give us a huge problem. How do we provide services without having multiple servers scattered throughout the internet?

So you might say, "Well, have servers scattered throughout the internet!" That's expensive for a project that is built out of our own pockets with adsense money. Plus, keeping databases in sync across multiple long-distance servers is painful/expensive as well.

If the web structure was more dependable, this wouldn't be as much of an issue. Local redundancy is easy compared to nationwide/worldwide redundancy.

How have some of you jedi developers tackled this problem?

    Dear Subscribers:

Greetings, all patriots. Yesterday, in my advisory, I correctly
warned about BushCo echoing the vacuous accusations made by BlairCo
regarding the role of Iran and Hezbollah in Iraq. Further scrutiny of
    Bush's operant-conditioning-of-the-U.S.-proletariat speech revealed
his targeting of the Internet as the evil medium through which extremists
    are getting information.

Expect further legislation to restrict Internet content and access.
On a related note, Wi-Fi distribution via municipalities is fervently
    opposed by the fascist-corporate crowd.

As Bush, and, of course, his handlers, grow increasingly delusional,
expect more fundagelical invocations, as evidenced in this BBC documentary of
    God Told Me To

This documentary will report that Bush told Palestinians that he had "a mission from God" to "go and fight those terrorists ... And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me ..."

BushCo's actions are intended to justify repression abroad as well as within the U.S. which is the
primary goal of his fight against "extremism".

    Patriotically yours,

I'm sure everyone in the Slashdot community will miss him - even if you didn't enjoy his work, there's no denying his contributions to popular culture. Truly an American icon.
