Tango Project to Make Open Source Beautiful?

DW writes "Steven Garrity has announced the Tango Project, fronted by himself and Jakub Steiner of Novell. The Tango Project is a collaborative effort of a variety of free/open-source software designers and artists to work towards unifying the visual style of the free (mostly Linux) desktop."

Seriously, I couldn't agree more. The XP and OS X GUIs are perfect for ditzy teen girls. All round, bubbly and colourful. As such, they're more apt for looking at, rather than using. And I don't think that will fly in the Linux/BSD/Solaris world. Most users of UNIX use UNIX because they want to get work done. And getting work done is impeded by excessively round buttons and crap like that.

Indeed, your typical NeXTSTEP- or Motif/CDE-inspired theme often allows for the most productivity, with the minimal amount of confusion.

I'm not dissing Chris, his comment is very valid in pointing out that this article is referring to "normal" people, but why do we want those people using linux?
I like linux because you HAVE to be a smart person to use it. The whole thing that makes it exciting and interesting is that it ISN'T easy, and it's a puzzle to solve. It's more productive because it gives you tools that most people arn't smart enough to use. The productivity boost directly correlates to the increased intelligence of the users that use linux. The last we need is to dumb down linux so these "normal" people can use it. The problem is their level of intelligence and computer afluence. Lets not have a "handicap accessable" linux please. Drinking from a water fountain 2 feet off the ground makes the rest of us handicap to compensate for the few, let's not make the same mistake with linux(few in terms of linux users that are of "normal" intelligence).
it's not that people are confused by command line interfaces, its that only know what they want, and since they don't know how to get it done, they can't pipe a couple commands togather to get what they want. It's also not that gui's are more intuitive and user friendly, it's that they do the thinking for you, you just tell them what you want and they do it for you.

the general rule of thumb is: If you can't do it the hard way you shouldn't be doing it the easy way.

if you don't have to think to get it done your not going to learn anything(which is why people that use handicap accessable operating systems(thinking Mac OS pre OS X) stay... well handicaped).

Quite the contrary. Power users couldn't care less what their icons look like. They stick with the defaults and just use their computers. (They also use Macs or PCs rather than Linux, but I digress.)

The folks who tinker with their icons and whatnot occupy a very narrow, very specific class of individuals who spend a vast amount of time in front of computers and yet who do basically nothing with them. It's really pretty sad if you think about it.
