Space Tourism Gets Another Passenger

Lothar+0 writes to tell us MSNBC is reporting that Daisuke Enomoto will be the next passenger to visit the international space station. Daisuke is a former executive of 'Livedoor' and creator of DICE-K who now lives in Hong Kong as a private investor. Apparently a long time self proclaimed fanboy of the Gundam anime series Daisuke says he will be dressing up as "Char Aznable" if the Russian agency will allow him to.

    Are we talking about masked Char, sunglasses Char, or the older "normal" looking Char? Either way, hopefully he does a better job than this guy.

    Like, every damn thing in that blurb is over my head. Dressing up as who? Dice-K? Livedoor? I saw an episode of that Gundam thing once and... let me just say it's humbling to know that billionaires have shitty taste, too.

      Agreed. I'd have to say, I don't equate "anime fanboy" with any income over about $50,000.

      I'm still not quite clear on who this guy is that he has so much money anyway. He is apparently the guy behind some lame website and something called "LiveDoor" (whatever the hell that is). Maybe that's the guy who made that door that was on Slashdot or one of these sites a few weeks ago that opens to allow just your particular frame shape through the door when you approach it. Or maybe not.

      What the hell is that supposed to mean? You think the only people who would enjoy anime are somehow mentally deficient in a way that would prevent them from getting a job in any field other than menial labour? Why is a rich person being a hardcore anime fan somehow less reasonable than a rich person being, say, a hardcore football fan, which I'm sure nobody would bat an eyelid at.

      Who said anything about menial labor? There are plenty of people with white-collar-type jobs that don't make near $50,000. However, you don't typically get rich by wasting your time playing videogames, watching television and engaging in cosplay. I don't think they tend to be extremely into sports, either (unless it's a sport that involves spending a lot of time with other rich guys, networking - like a skybox at a basketball game or golf memberships).

      Seriously, the only rich people you see at basketball games tend to be actors, musicians and directors. When was the last time you saw a CEO (of the level that has 20 million spare bucks to go to space with) attend lots of laker's games?

      And yes, I do think anime fans are somehow mentally deficient. Though I do like me some cowboy bebop (begrudgingly).

    I'm sorry but it's just pathetic when a grown man gets the opportunity to go to space and his first concern is if he can dress up like his favorite Gundam character....

    Perhaps, instead of going to space he should take some of that money and hire a psychiatrist.

      No kidding. My first concerns would be:

      1) Can I bring two other people with me?
      2) Can they be hot chicks?
      3) Can we have a steamy zero-gravity orgy?
      4) Are there statutory laws in space?

    And if he can't dress as Char Aznable, then he'll try to dress as Zechs Merquise and if he can't dress as Zechs Merquise, then he'll try to dress as Rau Le Creuset

    Actually, those are just the ones I've seen and there's a more complete list at Char Aznable, but none of them have a picture of the characters with the requisite mask.

      Ahh id like to somehow improve your karma for being so darn nice, but it seems your already good enough to get stories posted unlike me...

      Is there some super duper freinds with teh Tacomiester Excelent Karma level that i must obtain to one day hope to have a story up of my own ... *grabs right hand with left* argh.. must stop submission gripe spillage... so unable to express emotions regarding story submissions... *chops off hand to stop evil spreading* (props to the person that can successfuly IMDB link the movie that came from ;) )

      Just submit a story (or even just a link to a blog entry or a usenet post!) about how unfair women are treated and how there's such a huge gap in attention to women in gaming, IT, education, the computer industry, geekdom, math, etc.

      Trust me, it'll get accepted.
