Image Handling Flaw Puts Windows At Risk

An anonymous reader writes "Microsoft has released word that several image handling flaws may open Windows PCs to Spyware or viruses. From the article: 'We will continue to see this type of vulnerabilities in every major application for the foreseeable future ... It is not just images, but any type of complex file format. This is something that security researchers and hackers have realized to be a weak point in many applications.'"

Seriously, the real problem is someone needs to write some Suspend and Hibernate Code, and build in wifi drivers out of the box for the better distros of Linux (start with Centrino drivers, go from there), and then humanity can collectively dump Windows for good.

As it is, Windows XP continues to trash Linux in marketshare in the office and home desktop and laptop arenas simply for lack of these three features. Its the gods honest truth.

When you can put your machine to sleep (quiet, low power), and come back the next day, hit a button, and be right back where you left off work... no Linux distro can compete against that. And when you can get your wifi cards to work right out of the box with the manufacturer supplied drivers on disk without a ton of headaches, you can't compete against that either.

Nobody wants to leave their box running 24/7 and have to listen to that noise or be paranoid about the wear and powerdrain on a machine left up all the time, simply to keep their work where they left it.

We were a hardcore Linux shop (fervently religious about it too), but we had to face the writting on the wall... suspend mode rocks... where the computer goes to "sleep" and just powers the ram refresh and some few motherboard chips...

Someone has told me they've done this, but I haven't seen it filter down into the distros yet...
