Smash Bros. Creator On-Board For Revolution Smash
Gamespot reports that Nintendo has opened an office dedicated to the next-gen sequel to Smash Bros. From the article: "Heading up the new studio is the series' original creator, Masahiro Sakurai. He returns to the Nintendo organization after a two-year absence. According to Famitsu, Sakurai was persuaded by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata to return to Nintendo over conversations that took place at the E3 Expo held earlier this year. Preparing a new Super Smash Bros. game with such short notice was not easy for Sakurai, given the game's tight development schedule."
Smash Bros and its sequel hide gameplay gems behind the cutesy-looking characters. I'm really looking forward to this, because it's about time Nintendo stopped pumping out "Mario Parties" and started doing more MK and SSB stuff.
And when the hell are they going to release one on the DS? Online play, ala Mario Kart only this time with more freedom to choose whoever you want to play, and bam. Instant success. Jump Super Stars proved that it's possible, so what are they waiting for?
My hopes are kind of different. I though the single-player arcade mode of SSB, while obviously rushed and rather thin, was an awesome idea: Choose any of the classic Nintendo characres and play them in a world that contains levels taken from various classic Nintendo games. Try to play 'Ice climber' using Pikachu, or playing Zelda using Fox, etc. Given enough effort and polish, this could be a wonderful way to rediscover the magic of the older Nintendo titles. Even more fun would be a multiplayer co-op version of the arcade mode.
Try out fish, the friendly interactive shell.
Does this mean we can expect more than one Smash Bros game on the Revolution? I mean it'd be a huge waste of resources to open an office for one game then shut it down upon completion..
I would like to see a DS-edition of Smash Bros., but not as a complete stand alone game. We've already seen Gameboy/Gamecube connectivity with Metroid (where completing the GBA version unlocked the original Metroid in the Gamecube version [or something similar, my facts may be off]) and Animal Crossing (where your character could visit an island that you could transfer to your GBA, or where classic NES games could be transferred to the GBA.)
If Nintendo created not only an online SSB for the Revolution, but a DS "lite" edition that would allow for certain bonuses in each game reflected by your game stats (for example, playing the DS edition in multi-player mode for over an hour might unlock a new attack for a character in the Revolution edition) that would be quite interesting. Allow for exclusive maps, attacks, perhaps a hidden character that is unlocked on each console when first sync'ed. Account for records in each game. I believe something along that line would be very enjoyable.
My $1.25 on the topic.

the title of this article includes the phrase "Revolution Smash" and you know what? that has to be the title now. either that, or "Smash Smash Revolution." just don't get it crossed with "Smash Smash Xbox" because that could be costly and potentially retarded.
I was under the impression that the next Smash has been in development for a while. How are they supposed to make an amazing game with less that a year before the release of the Revo?
They say they might be putting 50 people on the project, but that will only go so far. The old adage of "hiring 9 pregnant women to produce a baby in a month" comes to mind.
"When the atomic bomb goes off there's devastation...but when the atomic bong goes off there's celebraaaaation!"
I hope that they include some more characters that aren't just different looking Mario. I can understand why they need Luigi, but is Dr. Mario really necessary? Being a self proclaimed master of Smash Bros, I can feel the difference between two similar characters, but it is a little disappointing to unlock Ganondorf to find out that he is just a Cptn Falcon. I am hoping for more unique, Ice Climber-type, characters.
You realize that Smash Bros unites pretty much every franchise Nintendo ever made and that's half the point of the game? There's no need to put Mario or DK into new genres but there's no point in removing them from an all-stars game.
Justice is the sheep getting arrested while an impartial judge declares the vote void.
Yes, but I can already seen the lineup for the next console.
Mariocart (likely a few of these, at least)
Mariobros
Marioparty
Smashbros
3 or > zelda games
2 or > metroid games
and a few innovative games that they'll dump mario on again.
I've done all these to death. Give me something new.
So you're suggesting to Nintendo that they dump some of the most successful franchises in gaming history and just... move on? Maybe Coke should stop making Coke. I've been drinking that crap for over 20 years! NO MORE!!!
Tell EA to stop making football games.
Nintendo is only one developer, albiet a very big one, oher people do make software for their hardware. Think of the first party games from MS and Sony, and theres a pretty big yawn (some shooters from one camp, and some boring platforming mario ripoffs from the other.) Nintendo usually goes off in crazy directions making new IP (nintendogs is a recent example, pikmin etc) and they do a better job at making new IP than most of the industry on average (iD software: wolfienstien quake and doom, lots of sequals to games which are basically the same with soem graphical tweaks, Blizzard: starcraft and warcraft, two games which are the same with different looking characters, and hey look, after the sequels of WC got boring, they made an mmorpg of it! Shame! etc etc)
Nintendo needs to rely somewhat on established franchises for financial stablity. But guess what, its obviously working, which means people are buying it, which means people like it.
if you don't like them, then don't fucking buy them you stupid cunt! Nobody's forcing you to play these games over, but I don't know how faithful Metroid Prime is to the NES version.
Yeah, let's compare a consumable like Coke with a video game..
Yet another botched analogy. There should be a posting rule that says "no analogies" since NOBODY can fucking get one right on this goddamned board.
