Xbox Live Leaderboards Corrected

Gamasutra reports that a bug that Xbox Live developed over the Holiday weekend has been worked out. From the article: "A short time after this, the vast majority of the missing scores, which were most obvious on Xbox Live Arcade titles such as Hexic and Mutant Storm Reloaded, were restored. [Major Nelson] also noted on his weblog, following reports that the outage might have been related to some kind of user hack: 'What happened was not a result of a hack (or hacks) or anything else security related. This is a bug, plain and simple.'"

We know that there was some minor hacking done on the 360 to cheat at Hexic, which caused scores to skyrocket for some players. There was word of another game having the same thing happen (I don't recall the link), so I'm not sure that I buy the "Oh, there was just a bug that's why the scores vanished". More like, they found the problem, fixed it, and don't want to admit that somebody broke a minor security point. It would be better just to say "We found some cheaters, now it's taken care of".

Now follow through with that logic-- what would they have to gain by covering that up? Just trying to save face? Why would they do that when they've been open on a lot of other things regarding the 360?

If the "bug" was actually a hack, then Microsoft would naturally try to hide it. Considering that they have been trying to pass off the 360 as "hack-proof", they would look pretty foolish if they admitted that their leaderboards were corrupted by hack-inflated scores.

According to the article you linked to, they didn't hack Hexic to get high scores, they hacked it and got the achievements, there's a difference.

And if these leaderboard problems were because they were getting rid of cheaters, then why have they restored the leaderboards to exactly how they were before everything was deleted? (therefore restoring all of the so-called "cheaters" scores too)

From Xbox360 fiascos to this, either people are just ganging up on MS or there is some serious problems with their XBox division. Didn't they recently reorganize their company? Hopefully this new organization will help to improve overal quality of the Xbox platform as I am loosing faith MS has any real control over the quality of their products or services.

Wait a minute, MS has no quality control over any product or service! So why is this news?

This is a bug with the high score table that was so obscure that it didn't pop up until the holiday weekend. How is this something they could have forseen ahead of time, again?

Oh well, either way, I'm sure I can top it soon anyway.

*sigh* I miss being #7 on the leaderboard for GW...
