Senators Renew Call for .XXX Domain
An anonymous reader writes "It's an election year again, and the usual PR causes are being picked up. Senators are once again pushing for a .XXX top-level domain to 'corral pornography'." From the article: "The bill suggests, but does not require, that .xxx serve as the domain name ending. Any commercial Internet site or online service that "has as its principal or primary business the making available of material that is harmful to minors" would be required to move its site to that domain. Failure to comply with those requirements would result in civil penalties as determined by the Commerce Department. It's unclear whether the measure will go very far. First of all, it could be struck down as unconstitutional, said Marv Johnson, legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union. "
Is pathetic how US thinks themselves as the police of the world.
Internet is a global net, people from everywhere watches everything, there are bigger countries than US, maybe not economically, but that doesn't gives the chance to American POLITICIANS to decide the LAWS to apply to other COUNTRIES! is the feeling of megalomany enough to start banning everyone!? and who decides what's harmful to kids? as far as I know, even Peter Pan is harmful to kids, imagine after watching the movie every kid launching themsleves out the window to fly like Peter, I mean, instead of making such a HARMFUL and UNCONSTITUTIONAL law like that (there are other constituions darn!) parents should educate and pay attention to kids.
".xxx" also would be a 2 sharp ended weapon, it would also make easier to detect every "harmful" content with only three magic letters.
my opinion? stupid law made only to create controversy on US's next elections, internet is the world, freedom c'mon, banning everyone just because of your megalomaniac campaign-winning ideas, next thing is net police or something.
instead you should be trying to solve REAL problems like world hunger or the issue of water, try signing the Kyoto's protocol, do something for all.
