Using some cheap Dell coupon codes that anyone can buy from Ebay ($750 off >$2000 and $35 off >$300 that stack) you can get a Windows laptop with better specs for under half the price.

And Apple is putting out overpriced x86 boxes.

I guess Apple loves their current market-share and thinks their stock-price is too high...

Well I wouldn't want to game with my 12" Powerbook with it on my lap. Surfing the web and other minor tasks don't heat things up much. apple slows things down. big deal you get greater battery life, and lower heat. Two things much needed for laptops.

Overpriced hunk of junk. On engadget there is a ragging debate over the cost effectiveness of the Apple 17" to compete with other dual-core setups from compariable solution companies like Dell, HP, and Toshiba. I know I'm not going to be accurate, but the specs match up, and even better on other machines than Apple's MacBook Pro but w/o the price tag. Mac OS X is a great OS and all, and I've owned about 6 12" G4 Powerbooks and I love the quality, craftsmenship ... but a cost bulge of over $1000 at LEAST in most cases?!

It just doesn't add up to make the investment into a desktop replacement, even if you DO like Apple machines, when you can simply work around the OS issues with a PC. Waste of money.

Frankly, I don't know why somebody doesn't build something along the lines of a 68040 powerbook with 2GB of RAM, no hard disk, running Mac OS 8.6 and a modern battery. You'd get a perfectly fine laptop for most of the things you really need* and ridiculously good battery life.

    * The big exceptions would be a solid modern browser and QuickTime. I don't see why Apple couldn't address both if it wanted to release such a product (fat chance!)
