E3 Previews for Capcom, Activision

Next Generation is offering up dirt on E3 lineups this week. Today they have offerings on Activision and Capcom. The one that grabs my attention? "Resident Evil 5 - To be perfectly honest, it's really likely that Resident Evil 5 is going to be a prettier Resident Evil 4 with a new plot and only minor alterations. The same could be said of the jump from Resident Evil to Resident Evil 2, however, and nobody can say that that sequel wasn't worthwhile."

Aside from a different plot, and prettier graphics, I'd say the most noticable difference between RE 1 and 2 would be the voice acting. Which, in RE1, whas laughable at best. The game and its FMV's were great, but when people started talking... it took every scary element out of the game. A particular scene at the beginning of the game comes to mind. After a few of the STARS agents go missing Barry pipes up in the discussion, complete with random arm flailing, "Wait a minute.. This place is dangerous!"

But the best part is when he hands some bazooka shells to the girl (can't recall her name), "I've found a weapon.. It's really powerful!" Yeah, Barry, I'm sure you're talking about the shells. My friends and I had a few good laughs at that line. Still, the game delivered a thrill factor and I sincerely look forward to Capcom's follow up to RE4.

You forgot about "the master of unlocking", which is probably the worst line ever uttered in a video game. I've actually heard people argue that RE's bad voice acting was intentional, that it was supposed to give the game the feel of a cheesy horror movie. That's just an excuse for mediocrity as far as I'm concerned. The rest of the game was pretty good for its time, good enough that I'm considering doing the whole thing over again on the DS.

At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, the only company I'm actually curious about (at E3) is Nintendo. Its not that I don't think the other companies will have amazing games, but more that if you took the other developers/publishers game releases from the past 5 years you could predict what games they are going to show, what the games are going to look like, what they're going to play like, etc.

I'll go a step further - that whole series is a wash. Maybe RE4 is good, but after the shit Capcom shoveled on the world in the form of that series, I'm not willing to give it a try.

Never understood the tank-driving victims that praised that hackneyed Dawn of the Dead ripoff.

But the article states that RE5 will basically be a prettier copy of RE4. One can only hope that Capcom won't make the mistake that Ubisoft made with Prince of Persia. Sands of Time got game of the year, so they made a sequel with a totally different combat system (that caters more to the PC version) and a lame storyline.

If Capcom is smart, the only thing they'll improve is the graphics, and change the story line. The rest should stay the same.

Super Smash Bros. Revolution Hitting Nintendo mascots with nonsensical objects is made new again.

Animal Crossing Revolution Spend hours and hours looking for furniture on a next-gen console.

Donkey Kong Revolution The big ape will be making his way to the Revolution in some form or another.

Metroid Prime Revolution It's a lock - the galaxy of Samus will be there in the next generation.

Unnamed RPG Few details are known about this next-gen RPG from the creators of Golden Sun.

... So the one title they can't have some sort of insulting blanket statement about has no guesses, either. How un-informative. Not even speculation like MMO interactivity for Animal Crossing.

So we have a few titles, but most are sequels, and nothing has been said about how they'll be different, controller-related or not. Donkey Kong and Mario are forecasted for 2006, and that's all we get. Keep on guessing.

Did you ever see Resident Evil 4 on the Game Cube? It was pretty close in visual quality to the screens they showed for Resident Evil 5 on that site. And the Revolution is going to be multiple times more powerful than the gamecube was, so I see no reason those screens couldn't have been for the Revolution as well.

Capcom has already said they have no plans to make RE5 for the Revolution. The Creative Director of the series said he'd prefer to build a new RE specifically for Revolution from the ground up, but first he'd like to make another game to get used to creating content for the controller.

So chances are, you'll see a Capcom exclusive for the Rev, but not RE5. The graphics have nothing to do with it.
