Japan to Sponsor International Manga Contest?
antifoidulus writes "According to Yahoo! news Japan is trying to boost its image abroad by promoting manga and anime, including possibly an international manga contest. They are also trying to double the number of people who eat Japanese food at least once a year to 1.2 billion(about 10x the population of Japan). While the article states that in the west the appeal of Japan is increasing, Japan is still having problems with its relations to fellow Asian countries such as China and South Korea."
Unless you're trying to attract pedophiles, manga and anime are pretty much useless for improving international relations.
The main problem that Japan has is that it has a terrible legacy due to its international boonie stomping across Asia some 60 odd years ago. Though today they do not resemble the Japanese of those days, the Japanese and Koreans have a long memory, what with the Chinese not appreciating being made subordinate to a tiny island nation and the Koreans unable to pry themselves away from their deeply ingrained inferiority complex.
Holding a manga contest isn't going to affect those feelings one bit.
