Debian DPL Threatens to Leave SPI Over Sun Java

An anonymous reader writes "A three-week-long flame war in debian-devel over the new Java Distribution License has culminated in Anthony Towns, the newly elected Debian Project Lead, offering to separate Debian from its legal representative, SPI. This came as a response to SPI member John Goerzen's objections to the Debian project's interaction with Sun's legal team around the new JDL license without review from SPI's lawyers."

Agreed. From the two messages linked in the summary, it's plain to see that Anthony Towns is just a cock.

Debian's project leaders (also known as "Der Führer") are notoriouly narcissistic and lack the basic self-control that should be present in fully matured human beings.

That said, Debian sucks cock. If you want obsolety software, just use FreeBSD (or even OpenBSD, if you swing that way; beware of Theo, though).

This whole Linux-toy is really throwing back Open Source.

This has happenned before with other software. Sun's license is shit and should be avoided by any sort of sane Linux distribution.

Why? Its free to distribute and Sun Java is more stable than any other impementation. If its free, then use it. If you are an RMS follower than I can see your objection. In his mind there is no alternative to the GPL. But this is a license that allows the free distribution of a very useful product. In order to promote linux further, its important to ship Sun Java. GNU java does not even come close to cutting it, its at least 4 years behind.

Sometimes I really respect the Open Source commmuities leadership and stance. This is not one of those times. Linux has been hyped long enough, its time to get it game ready. This is a no brainer.
