SCEA President Hypes PS3 Shelf Life Over 360
kukyfrope writes "Sony Computer Entertainment America President Kaz Hirai recently talked to San Jose Mercury News about their upcoming console. His argument is that, by waiting to deliver Blu-Ray and performance hardware, even at a high price, the PS3 will be in greater standing than the Xbox 360 in the long run. Hirai also takes a cop-out on the amount of hype surrounding the PS3 hardware performance saying, 'It's all about the games. We all know that [...] This is a console that is here for the long haul and is not on a five-year cycle. Microsoft is coming out with an HD-DVD accessory for HD movies as an add-on only a year after they launched: that is exactly the kind of thing we don't want to do.'"
Ignoring the summary has nothing to do with the actual interview(what else is new?)...
All of the Xbox and Dreamcast fanboys who have been so desperately posting stories like this one might as well be getting paid by Sony's marketing department.
You silly people have been screaming at the top of your lungs for weeks now that the PS3 will cost 600 bucks, have as many hardware defects as Microsoft has, games won't run at 1080p, you can't watch 1080p BluRay movies without HDMI, and so on.
Come November...
When everyone sees that for 499 you are going to get:
1080p movies with any 1080p TV that accepts component
Cheap BluRay movies - check the prices for the first BluRay movies to see for yourself
All of their existing DVD movies play fine and are upscaled
1080p games while wimpy consoles like the 360 are struggling at 720p or less with the Wii
Real backwards compatibility for the, what?, 14000 or so Playstation and PS2 games out there - just stick your existing disc in an play
Motion sensing controller
Their own desktop Linux machine that does webbrowsing - 1080p desktop - no blurry TV text
Free online play for games - no stupid 50 dollars a year just to be allowed to play online like Microsoft (how much does that add to the price of the 360? 200 bucks?)
1080p TVs are being pushed hard now and TV stations are constantly advertising HD signals. You will probably be able to get a 1080p set for around 1000 dollars come November. Once you have a 1080p TV you want nothing but 1080p content. And there is Sony with a 499 BluRay player that gives them the 1080p content the so desire(especially now that the image constraint token is dead) and all the games that 100+ million console players wanted from this current console gen.
Dreamcast and Xbox fans knock yourself out if it floats your boat. But you really should understand that you are doing nothing but acting as the best free viral marketing campaign Sony could possibly have for the PS3.
We are looking at the greatest console generation ever come November. An insanely powerful PS3 for your mainline gaming needs and a cheap Wii for when your friends come over. And Microsoft will at least have their exclusive Vista games, I guess.
Looks like you need some help with your math...
Wii: 249
PS3: 499
360: 399
PS3-360 = 100 bucks
PS3-Wii = 200 bucks
No one is going to be stupid enough to buy a gimped console like the 360 just because it is 100 bucks less. They may buy a Wii though - although the control gimmick gets old pretty quick.
