I'll be happy to have George W. Bush and Karl Rove know my every move as long as I get to know their every move. If anything, they should know nothing about what we do whilst we know every move they make. After all, they work for us.
If neither of those scenarios work, then they can butt the hell out of our lives.

Polytheism worked well, because even deities you personally didn't follow could still punish you if you misbehaved. Rationalism works, because everyone is forced to accept responsibility for their own actions. Monotheism is the worst of all worlds. Whether you're a jew blowing up civilians by the busload, a muslim oppressing women, a Roman catholic spreading AIDS in Africa or a protestant making a nuisance of yourself by celebrating a single long-ago victory, you have God, the Law-giver, on your side and by definition you can do no wrong.
