School Admins Demand Access to Students' Cellphones
Reverberant writes "School administrators in Framingham MA have implemented a policy allowing them to not only confiscate cell phones, but also to search through students' cell phone data as part of their anti drug/violence efforts. Students claim that the policy is an invasion of their privacy."
In terms of invasion of privacy, a game we like to play with phones when we confiscate them is to set the alarms to go off at 5 am in the morning and set random alarms for months to come in their organiser. That tends to annoy them a bit :). Anyways the way we work in my inner city london school is they shouldn't have them in school at all. It's just another thing that can be nicked and if they desperately need to contact someone, or someone needs to contact them then they can use the school office.

A de facto guardian that has no power, if you count the number of lawsuits people bring against the school for attempting to be the de facto guardian.
But as it is, is anyone really surprised? This is a page taken straight from the GWB playbook. And if, as kids, they are subjected to this kind of search and seizure when they become adults it won't be a "big deal" because they are protecting us from the terr'ists.

They are minors, they have no "rights" under the law except where labor practices are concerned. They cannot enter into a contract (easy way out of Columbia House), they cannot be prosecuted except in Juvie court (though I would wish otherwise) and anything they do to cause damage, their guardians are liable for the costs and repairs.
