Inside the Google-Plex
tappytibbins writes "Baseline magazine has an in-depth story about how Google manages its own IT infrastructure. From the article: 'In general, Google has a split personality when it comes to questions about its back-end systems. To the media, its answer is, "Sorry, we don't talk about our infrastructure." Yet, Google engineers crack the door open wider when addressing computer science audiences, such as rooms full of graduate students whom it is interested in recruiting.'"
Unisys contracted for EMC often comes in for our SAN maintenance. They wear jeans and a button shirt. Heck, one tech had to step out for an hour late one night to get his kids. Who gives a crap what they are wearing. On that note, I am unimpressed with the level of service that Unisys is providing us. I blame the questionable service level on a third party providing support for someone elses products. My opinion is based on actual work performance, not how much the clothes cost.
A co-worker and I often discuss the role of image. He is the support supervisor and I am the network supervisor. Obviously we have different goals as he is more directly supporting the "customers" and the network end is mostly backend void of actual end user interaction but anyway..
He makes his guys wear ties several times a week and is often trying to get me to make my guys wear ties as well. It is all about impression he claims. We all work in the same office and our users are employees of our company as well so even though we are only about 500 people, we do see and have some type of existing relationship with most of the people. Basically, our users are not Joe random off the street. We were going to lunch one day and a dude on the corner was selling magazines and actually walked with us pitching them for about 20 ft. We promptly blew him off and continued on. While eating the support supervisor brought up that his neighbor sells insurance or something and image is everything, full suit and tie, drives a Hummer, etc.. He claimed that image sets a trusting start and people will respect and listen to you. I asked him, what was that dude we saw about 20 minutes ago on the corner selling magazines wearing? He had no idea. Some impression that must have left on him.
