E3 2007 A More 'Targeted' Event
simoniker writes "Following some rampant media speculation over the weekend, the ESA trade organization has released an official statement on the future of the E3 game trade show, revealing that it is not cancelled outright, but is rather 'evolving into a more intimate event focused on targeted, personalized meetings and activities.' E3 2007 will still take place in Los Angeles next year, according to the ESA's Doug Lowenstein, but 'will not feature the large trade show environment of previous years.'" Which is to say, it's not really E3 anymore.
This is my own PERSONAL speculation but I have a feeling that if there's anyone to blame for the demise of E3 as we know it, you can point a finger at Sony.
Following the recent events and all the underwhelming press they've recieved since E3, not to mention being outshined by Nintendo less powerful hardware, I can only imagine they were the first of the big 3 to decide to take their toys and go home, citing the same reasons we're getting from all 3 now which is that the money spent wasn't worth the generated hype (which for Sony, was none). Microsoft followed suit probably thinking they're big enough to throw their own E3, and Nintendo said fine since they got exactly they hype they wanted anyways.
All said and done, if it was the case of Sony pulling out first, shame on them! Underwhelming E3's for other companies never stopped them from coming back the next year. For an event this size, to lose one of the 3 pillars, well, it just falls down like a house of cards.
Once again a personal opinion. I think we'll see something like it rise again from the ashes since it was the competitive spirit of the big companies that made E3 the showstand that it was, and will be again.
