Mac Pro, Mac OS X Virtual Desktops Announced at WWDC

haym37 writes "Of the many announcements yet to come at WWDC, the first is the announcement of the Mac Pro. The Mac Pro contains two Intel Xeons, up to 3 GHz, and is supposed to be 1.6x to 2.1x the speed of the PowerMac G5 quad. It can hold up to 2 TB of internal storage and up to 16 GB of memory. The graphics card can be up to a Radeon x1900 or an FX4500. The case will be the same as the PowerMac." MacRumors.com is providing running coverage from the floor (Note: "[U]pdates will be automatically inserted at the top of the updates section. Do not reload manually."), including another announcement that OS X will include virtual desktops. What a great idea!

The anticipation leading up to WWDC left a lot to be desired.. I was expecting some great new products, but there was nothing out of the ordinary. Lame.

I know! I remember when Microsoft Outlook came out in the 90's with that.

    > Spaces! Seems like the true virtual desktops that everyone has been asking for.

    How innovative!

Cut the GP poster some slack. Yes, Time Machine does more than System Restore, but that doesn't mean it's "nothing like" it. The comparison is apt, especially considering that System Restore is a feature more than one Mac user has wished Apple would incorporate into OS X.

Instead of sniping at the poster by suggesting that they are ignorant, you could have tried wording your reply more positively. For example:

"In your post, you said that Time Machine was like System Restore. I'd go even farther and say that it's better than System Restore for the following reasons..."

I guess you took a comparison to System Restore to be some sort of insult to Time Machine, but it surely wasn't intended to be.

Why is it whenever a negative comment is made, the Apple fanataics automatically bust the post down as far as they can?

Apple copying directly from Microsoft MacBU's Entourage app (not to mention Outlook)?

And Spaces looks like a straight copy from Xerox's Rooms app for Win3.1.

Refering to description on apple.com and the slides from keynote why the fuck you think it is an improvement? They just stated that "hey we have this new thing called Spaces and it is like virtual desktops". They have not said nor shown any details of the implementation itself and it is bit to early to judge on leaked copies reviews. So why the fuck you consider them to be better? Any solid argument? Because now you just *belive* they are. I don't see any difference between virtual desktops in virtually *any* X11 window manager (GNOME, KDE, XFCE whatever) - there are here (on X11) and I use them and that is nothing really sophisticated. For fuck sake it is only like having few desktops and a pager that displays their contents. Really - nothing macish about it. Maybe they will add some nice 3D effects - but the basics are the same.

What it is here to understand? Like few virtual displays so you can switch between them and keep different windows on each? Really...

I use Macs on daily basis (also I use X11 based desktops) and I don't see anything new from these slides - maybe I need to *belive*. But I am far from calling it "quantum leap" - maybe they added some nice eyecandy to it though.

Hilarious how the fruity Apple fanbois are now defending the paultry features of Leopard. It looks more like what a service pack would have for Windows XP. But the fanbois are the type of people that would shout "brilliant" if Steve Jobs sold his turd in Apple stores for a thousand bucks.
