Dangerous Apple Power Adapters?

An anonymous reader writes "Even with all these exploding Dell notebooks and other notebook safety problems, Apple has seemed relatively immune. Every once in a while, some odd thing came along, but it seemed like relatively calm waters. Not anymore — Apple's notebook power adapters appear to be the source of some serious safety concerns. Every iBook and PowerBook user should read this and keep a close eye on their adapter — the adapters suffer from very poor design including wires that seem prone to short out and burn and zero short circuit protection."

Why I remember just yesterday a whole Dell plant blew up, their inventory spontaneously erupting. You have no idea how huge a bite in the ass it is when all that resolution becomes debris in a wound. In the civil war they had to use maggots in fresh wounds contaminated by pixels, and that was back when resolution was 4x4. Now with new LCD technology, it has become a real nightmare. Do you think the average Malaysian hospital has the ability to properly treat (with modern methods, not maggots) a pixelated infection? Of course not. Until these companies realize that they need to grow an infrastructure beyond a frikking railspur in these developing nations, WE ARE ALL CRIMINALS.

Even worse, as a result of the same explosion, there has been significant contamination in the local water system. Huge quantities of "all" were already seeping into the groundwater, but now it is estimated that hundreds of thousands of gallons of "all" spilled directly into the Pahang River (look it up, bitches...I take my satire seriously). Soon we will have an "all" saturation of 1,000 pph (parts per headline).

What are the consequences? Well "all" is the natural enemy of "one" and its cousin "always" is the most common and numerous predator of "occasionally." "All" has already gotten rid of "one" and most occurences of "few" on the internet. Physical contaminattion of the Phahang Delta and neighboring reef environments will kill "all" local fauna...dammit. Now I got it. I got a big pile of "all." Thanks /.

The author really doesn't seem to be speaking much truth at all, I'd be inclined to think this isn't even a true story, if this actually happened he wouldn't sit and write a few paragraphs about fire safety, when he could be getting all new hardware from apple for nothing.

His "facts" are outright wrong in either the positive or negative sense. First of all the materials are fire safe, as required by construction standards, fire retardent plastic is used. Secondly if you do decide to go spark happy on the unit, it will shut down, and auto reset when unplugged for a small amount of time. On the flip side, Apple -have- had battery + fire issues, similar to Dell. The exception being that there has been no doubt at all that apple didn't jump right into a battery recall once this happened, which is in contrast to Dell where there is suspicion they left it for a little while to see if it was an isolated incident.

On the other hand 24.5V is almost nothing to worry about especially with such a low current.

A final point to be made is how is his power adapter being used such that it's close enough to burn his powerbook... while I'm not one for strict policy, they do actually tell you to unwind the cable fully before use. (no one likes a magnetic field mmkay.)

Good to see Slashdot keeping up the barrage of anti Apple stories. I'm still waiting on one tying Mac use to herpes. Or that a rather disturbing number of Mac users are gay. Were they gay before using the Macs or did the computers have something to do with it......? There's a very definate bias on the site. You almost never hear a negative story about Linux inspite of how difficult it is to set up and maintain and even Microsoft bashing is frowned on but somewhat tolerated. Apple bashing though is strongly encouraged. Given Apple's over all quality this seems very suspicous and at best one sided. I have yet to see an article pointing out that the features in Vista are nothing like the feature set in Leopard, I have seen articles claiming Leopard is nothing but a clone of Vista though. Nothing could be further from the truth. If there's an openminded person left on the forum I challenge them to use Firefox and open a tab with the Vista breakdown and the Leopard preview and toggle between them. A few of Vistas features are an obvious rip off of Leopard or more to the point Tiger since they have been around for awhile in the Mac world and they don't appear up to the level they are in Leopard. There are radically more improvements for the user in Leopard than in Vista and Apple is claiming the best is yet to come where as Vista is a fairly complete list. I'm not a Mac fan and just recently started using them and I do find them superior to Windows systems. All I can think is there's a lot of hostility to Macs because of the closed nature of the hardware. Sorry if not being able to overclock costs you macho points and dates but with quad Xeons availible most really don't need overclocking except for bragging points. You don't have to love or even like Macs but it's really pathetic how obvious the negative press has been. Try a Mac for a week and you tell me? Hey I can even tell you a few apps that will crash on Macs if you start feeling homesick for your PC. Yes there is software that is unstable on Macs like on PCs it's just not as common.
