Globalization Decimating US I.T. Jobs

mrraven writes, "According to Ronald Reagan's former deputy secretary of the treasury in this article in Counterpunch, globalization is destroying US I.T. jobs. From the article: 'During the past five years (January 01 – January 06), the information sector of the US economy lost 644,000 jobs, or 17.4 per cent of its work force. Computer systems design and related work lost 105,000 jobs, or 8.5 per cent of its work force. Clearly, jobs offshoring is not creating jobs in computers and information technology.'" Paul Craig Roberts quotes a number of formerly pro-globalization economists who are now seeing the light of the harrowing of the US middle class. It's not limited to I.T. Roberts quotes one recanting economist, Alan Blinder, as saying that 42–56 million American service-sector jobs are susceptible to offshoring.

Maybe YOU said globalization was a good thing but speak for yourself I was very much in favor of the protests against the WTO meetings in Seattle in 1999. I didn't go but many of my friends did and got tear gassed for their troubles. Looks like us rads were right about globalization just like we were right to protest the disaster of the war in Iraq. Maybe it's time the MSM stopped laughing at rads and started listening, and giving our views some air time considering our excellent track record over the past 10 years. Giving Noam Chomsky an Amy Goodman more MSM air time would be a good start.

What the American president talks about is an "ownership society" which means he wants Americans to continue to control 99% of the world's wealth. In other words, to own your slaving ass while you work for a pittance in some backwater country. That's what this "globalization" phenomenon is really all about: outsourcing to get something for nothing (the same labor for extremely reduced wages), and insourcing to get nothing for something (zero economic growth for marginally improved wages).

You want economic freedom? Either move to America and pay some taxes, or make it happen in your own country. I guess it's just too easy to suckle at the American corporate teat than to actually work to improve the lives of your friends, relatives, and fellow citizens.

Don't like America? Don't take American money. Unfortunately that doesn't fit into your enlightened, post-Soviet attitude because your country's economy simply can't provide a competitive standard of living for your countrymen, let alone sate your obvious personal greed. If you put some effort into supporting your own nation you might be able to turn this around. But no, you don't really want to compete on a national level, you'd rather selfishly leech off of American business. You'll never be able to recreate the success of American industry by taking payoffs from American business. Many of your European brothers understand this, but you obviously do not. Meanwhile, your country continues to be oppressed by an economy dependent on wealthy foreigners.

The bottom line is this: you can't have it both ways, and you never will. All other nations will continue to get screwed by the USA -- forever. Don't think for a second you'll ever rise above the third world chasing American dollars. Your big paycheck might make you feel like a big fish, but believe me, you're still living in a tiny, dirty little pond. Get used to being a second-class world citizen, it's only going to get worse.

So are you saying non-whites are incapable of reaching that significant level of education, and should therefore seek traidtional manufacturing jobs?

Fine, hire positive people. But don't be surprised when at the end of the day you have a lot of enthusiastic people but no product to show for it. People who are positive by temperment end up in sales, or HR, or some other touchy-feely type position. Positive people in technical positions are either inexperienced or terminally clueless. Your best possible outcome: You hire a bunch of young, inexperienced, positive people and turn them into bitter cynics in the course of turning out your product.

Nothing, but nothing, will save you if you hire positive people as test engineers test engineers.
