Shiny Acquisition Leaves Earthworm Jim Wriggling?

simoniker writes "Shiny Entertainment head Michael Persson has been talking about the company's recent acquisition by Foundation 9, the studio's existing IPs (including Earthworm Jim), and the company's future without either David Perry or Atari at the helm. Persson talks about the latest incarnation of Earthworm Jim, which Shiny was developing for PSP after quite a few previous speedbumps (among them EWJ co-creator Perry leaving and Doug TenNapel also becoming disassociated from the project): 'We were working on that, and we're not working on it anymore. But it's really up to Atari to make an announcement about that, I probably can't even make that statement officially, but obviously we're not working on it.' Back to the drawing board yet again?"

The news makes ME sad, and I'd hardly say I'm a rabid fan boy. It's just a nice bit of nostalgia for me, Earthworm Jim was one of the first games I played.

Does anyone else think that Dave Perry is overrated? I'm starting to think that much like George Lucas and Star Wars, the early Shiny game were great despite Dave Perry, not because of him.

Would anyone care to leap to his defense?

Earthworm Jim was just another one of those early-90's games put out in promotion of a toy line.
The game came first. The success of the game then led to the cartoon, which then led to comics and toys (which IIRC were based on the cartoon much more than the game.)

I reckon gamers can give a franchise a second chance even if devs botch it up (I was quite disappointed with EWJ3D).. I can't see a reason why EWJ can't become a cash cow for Shiny once more. Except of course it's creatively demanding. Dave Perry was at his best with platformers. His Matrix games suck and he still believes he can do decent movie-to-game translations. I miss that old worm :(

In Earthworm Jim 3D and the animated series he was played by Dan Castellaneta same guy who is the voice as Homer Simpson.

EWJ was one of the few games of the time which didn't take itself too seriously which made for some fun gaming, shooting cows into outer space, using himself as a whip, classical music sound tracks.. awesome game..

Although it was a little difficult in parts, the novelty of the gameworld made up for a lot of that.

Wow, you're really, really up yourself. I'm not a fanboy, I owned one EWJ game way back on the Mega Drive. I just thought it was sad that you accused the games of being nothing more than a marketing ploy to sell toys - which is completely false.

Actually no you meant Mandrake, MDK is one of the best 3d games almost no one has ever played, it is simply Dave Perries masterpiece. Take the humor of Earthworm Jim to an adult level, mix it into a surreal 3d surrounding and add hardcore shooting action and jump and run and you end up with MDK, no game before and after (except for MDK2 maybe) ever has been similar to it. If an action game can be perfekt MDK comes close. I highly can recommend get this gem and play it.
