Apps/ecosystem cost you a bit more on iOS - but not sure if that is that big of a barrier for entry. However, top-end android phones and iPhones cost about the same even when unsubsidized.

I wish I had the mod points to mod you up beyond troll. Yes, what he did is inexcusable, but it all sound like blackmail to me on her part. Both people are being shitty. At least he admitted his shittiness (mind you, this doe NOT absolve him of anything)... she is acting like she is entitled to be a bitch... no one is entitled to that crap.

That being said, her shitty attitude may very well be a product of shitty treatment as she grew up - but blackmailing dad (if that is what she is doing) to get 'revenge", that is inexcusable too.

Live below your means, quit getting stuff because "you need it now", quit buying stuff that requires financing, use the left overs to pay debt.... and voila, debt goes away (granted if you have income, bad things happen to good people sometimes)!!

I was dumb on my finances for years, now I cut down my expenses (I could go further too, if need be), learned to budget properly with my wife and making a dent in all of it.

ALSO - It IS an option for everyone ... everyone can at least give this a go instead of just ignoring it for several years when it turns into a bigger problem. If this is what you are doing, congratulations, you won't have to worry about this after 5-10 years, hopefully. hell, even start investing some of that money (after the debts are gone) so when you are OLD, you have NO major worries.

Methinks Gizmodo read too much into this AIM phenomenon than it really was... IRC was around, people didn't use it as it required a lot of manual setup with many clients. However, there was also ICQ, which started BEFORE AIM and was pretty popular also. Within 2 years of launching, Yahoo messenger and MSN messenger was in the fray. So I don't know what microcosm this dude came from, but while AIM was popular, it only had a very short-lived dominance in my mind and I never noticed a culture around it (I noticed one around the ICQ world more than AIM).

That being said I still have my AIM handle - it is used in my GTalk pane in GMail. I talk to one person with it, sometimes, thinking of just ditching it and staying with GTalk.

  25. Spending accounts? on Apple Moves To Stop Kids Racking Up iTunes Bills · · Score: 1

We gave out kids debit cards that have just a certain amount on them. They are very much like debit-based gift cards, except these have their name on them and act like a bank debit card. We can put as little or as much as they want on those cards. There are no overdrafts on these cards, however. If they reach 0 or a transaction would go negative, the transaction is declined and nothing pulls from our main account. They use those on iTunes.

Of course, some kids are too young for that perhaps... so do something similar with a parent-controlled account? Keep only $10 or $20 on it max for such purchases, so if the child gets too nuts, it just declines the purchase.

Of course, asking for a password each time in iTunes, I guess works also :-P
