Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 for PS3 Announced

News for nerds writes "Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 is slated for release mid-November with support for the Sony PS3 first, and support for the former Apple PowerPC product line to follow. Any updates required to support the Apple PowerPC systems following the release for PS3 will be made available via a free download."

for all 3 people planning on paying through the nose for a PS3, 2 of whom have no interest in linux.

Can't we a small linux distro for the wii instead?

So you are the guys who keeps anonymously posting this FUD about the 360. Well here is my take, in your style of one sentence per line:

The PS3 final hardware hasnt been delivered yet to developers
The PS3 final software hasnt been delivered yet to developers
The PS3 final online system specifications have not been delivered yet to developers
The Xbox 360 has done all the above, is cheaper, and has a 5 million box head start in sales.

And yet this magic PS3 box is supposed to be delivered to the public next month! What a disaster.

How does this troll get marked up informative? It is clearly wrong:

I assume the Yellow Dog Linux system will be installed on each harddrive - along with a BluRay system disc for people who need/want to reinstall. I remember someone from Sony saying something along those lines last year.
NO - YDL WILL BE DOWNLOADABLE BUT HASNT BEEN CREATED YET. IT IS NOT PRODUCED BY SONY AND WILL NOT BE ON THE HARDDRIVE.

YOU MEAN EITHER $499 OR $599 DEPENDING ON IF YOU WANT THE CRIPPLED VERSION. EITHER WAY IT IS $100 MORE THAN THE XBOX360 AND $200 MORE THAN THE WII.

Also I remember talk of future PS3 versions with more RAM or multiple Cell chips are something Sony is planning. I would die for a dual or quad Cell based system with a couple gigs of RAM running Linux for my desktop.
COOL WE SHOULD WAIT FOR THESE VERSIONS THEN? WHY WOULD I BUY A $599 BOX THAT WILL BE SUPERCEDED BY A NEWER VERSION?
