Firefox 2.0 To Debut Tuesday
An anonymous reader writes "Firefox 2.0 for Tuesday, says the Seattle PI. They give a quick recap of some of the new features, and discuss the ongoing IE vs. Fox debate." From the article: "Version 2.0 also improves on the tabbed-windows interface that Mozilla innovated and that Microsoft introduced for the first time last week with IE7, its biggest upgrade since 2001. Analysts said IE7 is a significant improvement over its predecessor, but the big question is whether it will stem Firefox's growth at Microsoft's expense. Firefox's share of the browser market has grown to 9.8 percent of the U.S. market this month, from 2.9 percent in October 2004."
the tabbed-windows interface that Mozilla innovated
Lies. You know, marketing BS like this puts Mozilla in the same camp with Microsoft in my eyes.
Wow, Spell Checker!!! Awesome what an innovative feature. Sure wish IE7 had that in it. Oh wait it does!! OH my god......Firefox is copying features. Let me write an article about it and post it on Slashdot so all the users with some odd inferiority complex can respond to me!! Wait, but first they must feverishly use Google to find what other browsers [that they have never used] have had built in spell checkers in them so they can post a response. Then we will find out that it doesn't really matter where a feature came from or who uses what browser!
Opera also innovated pop-up blocking and mouse gestures. Are you going to scream at us about that next, or just admit that Opera was the first with these features, and Mozilla simply "borrowed" them?
"Sufferin' succotash."
No, they didn't. Opera had its MDI interface back in 1994 in a technical preview. When people talk about "tabbed browsing," what they're referring to is the idea of having one browser window containing multiple pages, which is essentially MDI. Mozilla also stole pop-up blocking and mouse gestures from Opera.
"Sufferin' succotash."
And provided you have gobs of memory, and stability isn't an issue.
Then we will find out that it doesn't really matter where a feature came from or who uses what browser!
You overestimate the dominant species on this web site. The formal name is technicus dorkus, but we usually just call them nerds. The first thing to understand about nerds is that their naturally occuring habitat is very hostile to them. Jocks beat them up. Women won't give them the time of day. PHB's treat them like hot-swappable resources of the machine. They spend almost every waking moment dealing with rejection in some form or another. So they've done the only thing they can to prevent going from mostly insane to completely, and that is arbitrarily pick categories of things from their precious little domain, and then assign "good" and "evil" (a la binary, since nerds don't have the capacity for "fuzzy logic" or shades of grey) within those categories. Poof, instant vehicle from which they can derive self-esteem, and a feeling of belonging! So my good friend, you see, if you take away their fantasy that it matters where a feature came from or what browser people use, you leave them with absolutely nothing upon which to base their self-worth on! You insensitive clod!
There are these things called "standards", if you didn't know. From what I hear from "web developers", most do not. Look them up. Here, I'll even give you a URL
Hehe, you know... one morning you'll wake up and realize there's nothing to be so smug about. It takes years sometimes. Until then, you can keep having fun pretending you're smarter than everybody, and talking down to people with far more experience in the area you argue about.
