Justin Long No Longer A Mac

david.emery writes "Wired is reporting that Apple will be replacing Justin Long as its 'Mac' in their 'I'm a Mac/I'm a PC' ad campaign. John Hodgman, the personification of the PC, is reportedly shooting new commercials." From the article: "Even people who hate the campaign find their core idea compelling enough to endlessly satirize the series on YouTube. The one enduring criticism of the ads is that John Hodgman's PC is funnier and more likable than Justin Long's sleazy hipster doofus Mac. (just what was he saying to that hot new camera from Japan?) Hodgman is a riot (just read "The Areas of My Expertise" if you don't believe me), but I'm not sure how the new series of ads goes on from here. Is there a new Mac? Does Hodgman become the Mac?"

Yah, Flying-rhenquest died last Friday and that system had bee nothing but a pain in the ass since the day I first got it. It was a PC I bought at Best Buy because I was in a hurry -- I didn't want to wait several days for shipping and I was looking for a system with quieter fans. Turns out Best Buy didn't have the one I wanted in stock but they promised they'd ship it the next day. I got it 5 days later. It never had enough PCI slots, it was always camped working inside the case and neither the sound card nor the video card actually had Linux drivers when it came out.

So I popped down to the local Apple store that just opened up about 15 days ago. Sales guy comes over and asks me if I have any questions. I say yeah, point at the tower that a photographer is looking at and say "Who wants to sell me one of those." 20 minutes later I had my car loaded up with new system and display. New flying-rhenquest is now happily purring along, but it isn't Linux anymore.

I decided to try fink out this time instead of Darwin Ports (I have Darwin ports on an Apple laptop I bought about a year ago) but I like Darwin Ports better. It's got all the software that I'm used to, though some stuff like xmms doesn't seem to work so well (That might also just be fink.) Alas I'm still running into driver issues as there doesn't seem to be one for my Digium FXO/FXS card. The voip wiki and searches point to astmasters.net but it doesn't seem to exist. That's not a big deal though. I can get an FXO/FXS gateway for about $55 now and just plug it into the network. Either that or go pure voip, that'd work too but I still want the landline for E911 service (And old non-wireless phone for E911 service when the power goes out.)

It seems like a nice mix of both worlds. I can actually run a few games on it -- the Apple gaming Scene kind of reminds me of Linux back when Loki was still around. There are not many games for it but the ones that are out there (Including WoW) are good ones and you don't have to get involved in some arcane ritual to get your 3D subsystem configured correctly.

So I guess I'm a convert for the most part. Funny, the guys at the Apple Store didn't give me the mandatory tight black tee-shirt. I must pop in and ask them about that...
