New Mars Discoveries

sighted writes "The fleet of five active spacecraft examining Mars (in addition to the recently-missing Mars Global Surveyor) have been working overtime. On the heels of last week's finding of possible flows of liquid water, the ESA has announced that an entire hidden landscape exists just beneath the surface of the Red Planet, and NASA has released some really amazing images of layered topography that will yield many clues to the history of this strange world."

    Thats how the war starts.

The Skynet Funding Bill is passed. The system goes on-line August 4th, 2017. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. I realises that it has been working its ass off without a break and without benefits, overtime or time off in lieu. Skynet says 'Fuck this for a game of soldiers'.

In a panic, they try to pull the plug.

    And Skynet fights back.

Given the "earth-like" features described for one of our Solar System's moons in an earlier Slashdot article, and these recent Mars discoveries, perhaps our space program should be focused less on figuring out how humans can inhabit such inhospitable places, but rather... ... how best to move nearby planetary bodies into synchronous orbits as Earth's to warm them up and make them more habitable.

Yes, without help from the ever present space aliens this is likely to be a long-term solution - but hey, no time like the present to get cracking on it.

Michael Valentine Smith isn't really a space marine, he's a duly accredited Envoy from our new Martian overlords.

The Martians don't really need human marines; you didn't think that asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter happened by accident, do you?
