Russian Rocket Hits Wyoming

Harmonious Botch wrote in with a CNN story that opens: "A spent Russian booster rocket re-entered the atmosphere Thursday over Colorado and Wyoming, the North American Aerospace Defense Command said. NORAD spokesman Sean Kelly said the agency was trying to confirm a report that a piece of the rocket may have hit the ground near Riverton, Wyoming, at about 6 a.m. Kelly said military personnel had not yet reached the scene. No damage was reported and the debris was not believed to be hazardous, NORAD said. Eyewitnesses reported seeing flaming objects in the sky at the time the rocket was re-entering, Kelly said."

Or since the radiological alarm not go off it was deemed not worth shooting at?

Er... Yes. The US has lost quite a lot of wars.

If you study history rather than Hollywood it will strike you that America is actually rather bad at fighting, and joins very few wars unless she is overwhelmingly likely to win with few casualties. Even then inexperience together with an excessive reliance on equipment and a reluctance to either use intelligence or carry the fight at close quarters to the enemy usually results in stalemate at best.

Most of the time America stays away from wars and makes money out of selling materials to both sides in the conflict. The classic belief that the US 'saved' the free world in WW2 is better viewed from this angle.

I'm not complaining about this - it seems a sensible way to behave, and I wish more countries in the world behaved like this. I don't think fighting at the drop of a hat for honour and undertaking desperate heroic charges to slaughter the enemy is a very clever way of life, as some European nations seem to think.

However, I am always embarrassed by the Hollywood portrayal of the American soldier. In their efforts to stress our bravery they are now famous for taking some known heroic incident which Canadians, Brits, Aussies or Germans originally performed, and then resetting it with American personnel. This shames us in front of the english-speaking world.
