Tycho, Miyamoto, Talk to MTV Games

MTV's Stephen Totilo went to GDC last week and came back with a bag full of interesting interviews for faithful gamers. Speaking with Miyamoto early in the week, they had the chance to talk about Miis in the land of Hyrule, and playing Mario one-handed. Totilo also confirmed that the content-less keynote was due to a stock-related ban on future information. Bad timing, all around. At the end of last week, he had a chance to catch up with Penny Arcade's Jerry Holkins (Tycho). They chatted about the Rain-Slicked Precipice of Darkness, and the duo's high aspirations for the game: "If you're asking me whether or not I hope we make a good game, then yes, we are trying our best to make a game that is not annoying, that is not a pain in the ass, that can be played through in a reasonable time and is enjoyable from the beginning to the end."

An interview with Miyamoto, or Tycho, could be interesting. But nothing MTV airs is interesting.

Gawd, I actually watched MTV's "sneak XBox 360 preview party", thinking I'd learn something about it, instead of just watching a terrible infomercial all x-tremed up to the maxxxx an keepin it real.

Well, that was the problem. I watched the one on skin-a-max, it was only x-tremed up to the maxxx and was quite, um, informative.... That extra x makes all the difference.

Actually MTV, at least on its website, has a pretty respectable gaming news department. Yeah, everything they put on TV is awful vapid crap, but don't write off MTV's online games coverage. It's easily as good as most other gaming sites (though that doesn't say a whole lot, I admit).

No matter who interviews him, he's always got some inspiring things to say. I think it's really interesting to hear that Nintendo is letting their developers screw around like they do... I think it's the mark of a company that's really thinking in the long term, since "playing around" does not gain immediate results or profits. I guess I should expect as much from a company that's been around more than 130 years.

Also, I find it amusing that Miyamoto's telling MTV to tell kids not to follow fads, I just have to wonder whether that was supposed to be a bit of a smug comment.

So, both interviews are essentially no-news? Miyamoto wasn't allowed to talk about the future, and the only news we got about RSPOD was that it, to paraphrase Tycho, "Won't suck, hopefully"?
