The Nintendo DS Games Wishlist

The site Retrogaming with Racketboy has up a wishlist of sorts, calling out the classic titles begging to be released to the Nintendo DS. Along with the Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World cart that I've been wanting to see for a while now, Racketboy calls out Super Metroid, the Sega Genesis Collection, and the Namco Museum as great candidates for DS releases. He also asks for new titles, like a compilation of Wario titles and a NSMB-style remake of Super Mario Bros. 2. "MattG PressTheButtons also had a really great idea for an original DS game that would serve as a follow-up to the very popular New Super Mario Bros. But instead of continuing with the traditional Mario gameplay, Nintendo would go back to the Super Mario Bros 2. (Doki Doki Panic) action, complete with turnip-throwing goodness. Would it be quite as successful? Possibly not. But I think Nintendo is currently in the position to take some fun risks with some trademark franchises that could give the gaming community something new to talk about."

I've been begging for a solid RTS for my DS since they were launched (and don't want to deal with the headache of modding needed for Touch of War). StarCraft would be a good start.

Zero Mission wasn't "more like the original Metroid", it was a complete remake. It shared the same BASIC level architecture... although it changed so much that at times it's almost impossible to tell. It basically used a slightly altered varient of the Super Metroid engine, which was completely different from the original. Having played both, and Super Metroid, I'll say that Metroid Zero Mission is a completely different game than the original. Don't think you've played the original metroid if you've played ZM. It's a lot more like Super Metroid, in terms of gameplay, graphics, and look & feel. After all, Super Metroid is sort of a remake of the original... takes place in the same area, battles some of the same bosses, and has basically the same basic premise.

That said, I loved Zero Mission, and thought that, except for its shorter length... was, minute to minute, every bit as good as Super Metroid. Definitely one of the best games for the GBA (MUCH better than that abomination, Metroid Fusion). But yes, a remake of Super Metroid for the DS would be great. But even more, I'd like to see a NEW side-scrolling Metroid game. Don't get me wrong, Prime is one of the best games ever made... but its gameplay makes it a totally different series, and I want more sidescrolling action to augment my 3D game library.

  4. Starts with an X and rhymes with COM by Anonymous Coward · · Score: 2, Insightful

I want to see an update to X-COM on my DS. To be more specific, after Rebelstar: Tactical Command, I'd like to see a new take on it where instead of defending Earth from Aliens, I lead a rebellion against Aliens already in control. Imagine this: You manage hidden bases just like before, only now you have to keep them self sufficient by growing food and generating power. You send out teams to raid for supplies, shoot down alien craft, and generally make a nuisance of yourself to the bad guys until you can start freeing the world from alien domination by destroying their bases on Earth and then the solar system. The black market gives you a way to buy and sell some items, and you research alien technology and learn to modify and duplicate it. I'd also like to see the ability to build facilities for soldiers to train in so that combat isn't the only way they can improve their accuracy and become useful.

Seriously, the DS needs such a game. I have to keep mine in another room when I sleep because it cries for this game all night long.

Hell, ANY system needs such a game... Just keep the classic turn-based setup, ok?

Monkey Island, Sam & Max, Grim Fandango! Point and click adventures, dammit. The best console out there right now for these types of games.

  6. Thanks for all the ports.... by kinglink · · Score: 2, Insightful

Seriously does anyone have an original idea? I'd much rather my consoles and handhelds have 100 original games then 1000 ports or knock offs. Every time I hear someone bring up an idea like "it'd be just like metroid, only with." I get a little bile in the back of my throat from a mini-throw up.

If you want ports and poorly done games get the PSP there's tons there. The DS really has a semi solid line up of games, asking for a ton of ports just ruins systems, not making them better. If you want these games, ask for them on the VC, not the DS. Demand better games on the DS.
