Mouse Brain Simulated Via Computer
Mordok-DestroyerOfWo writes "Researchers from the IBM Almaden research lab and the University of Nevada have created a simulation of half a mouse brain on the BlueGene L supercomputer. 'Half a real mouse brain is thought to have about eight million neurons each one of which can have up to 8,000 synapses, or connections, with other nerve fibres. Modelling such a system, the trio wrote, puts "tremendous constraints on computation, communication and memory capacity of any computing platform."' Although there's more to creating a mind than setting up the infrastructure, does this mean that we may see a system for human mental storage within our lifetimes?"

A "me too" post with a karma bonus deserves to be modded "overrated" as does any +5 post that, in the opinion of the modder, just doesn't deserve it especially it would be inappropriate to mod the +5 post with a troll or flamebait label. In other words "overrated" and "underrated" are useful tools for modding posts that have been given scores that are just too high or too low.
Another example, I see a lot of post modded down to -1 because they express a political opinion. I may not agree with that opinion but they don't deserve to be modded into oblivion. For me that's a good place for an "underrated" mod; I don't agree but it deserves to be part of the conversation.
