Posting Porn Link Judged Unlawful in Hong Kong

hkxforce writes "Can you imagine posting a link to a website that would get you arrested by the police? In Hong Kong, a middle-age man has been heavily fined for posting a porn link in an adult discussion forum. 'A court in the Kwun Tong district of the city heard that Woo provided a hyperlinked message on the forum which, when clicked, would enable other forum users to access an overseas pornographic website showing the photos. But Internet Society chairman Charles Mok Nai-kwong said the court case raised several concerns. 'In this case, the court has given a new direction to the public concerning the responsibility of internet users,' he said. Mok added that he also believed the case could damage the freedom of information on the internet. 'This man posted a link on the internet which now becomes an act that constitutes the breaking of law, and my question is whether a link is being regarded as the 'obscene article,'' he said.'"

If you're a cop, you can have some marijuana and still get a way with it.

I am an expatriate Hongkonger for the time being and have posted many links criticizing the policies of the Chinese dictatorship. Maybe I'll be safe since I'm not addressing the Cantonese or Peking-script-using audiences. And unlike in China, advocating freedom (secession) for the PLA-occupied neighboring states isn't yet deemed a criminal offence in Hong Kong, although the Peking-controlled Hong Kong government intends to change that little liberty sooner or later.

What I've learned here is that the Chinese people, whether in Hong Kong or in China, overwhelmingly ignore human rights or their country's ongoing genocides simply in order to feel prouder (saving face) and to make more money. Shame is only something to be dished out to foreign devils for their past imperial sins.

This convicted guy's sin appears to have been to post a god-damn link to an erotic site (what if the page became unkosher only after linked to the page?) without having a business plan for profiting from foreigners' interest in nudity!

Just the other day I clicked on a link on Slashdot taking me to the Wikipedia site for... clitoris! (yeah, I've actually seen one in real life but was curious about what the self-claimed EXPERTS say) Had the poster been from Hong Kong, would s/he now ne facing legal action for such a lewd act?

Despite of the push to adopt Confucian values there are still a lot of people in Hong Kong wishing to retain a large degree of personal freedom, even if that open-mindedness doesn't extend to neighboring peoples.
