Microsoft Bans Modified Xbox 360s From Xbox Live
An anonymous reader writes "Microsoft has now officially started banning Xbox 360s that have had their DVD drive firmware modified from Live, possibly using information brought in by the Crackdown-originated Halo 3 beta downloads. Scene site forums have already collapsed under traffic, and Microsoft has officially confirmed that they are banning modded Xbox 360s to keep the online playing field fair and level."
What does banning altered consoles have to do with keeping online play 'fair and level'?
I thought that copies are identical to the originals.
Why should I buy a XBox360 when I can't mod it?
Why indeed. I'd prefer to spend a bit more money and get a general purpose computer that will not impose restrictions on my usage. If you can't install Linux on it or otherwise do with it as you please, it's not anywhere near as useful as it should be.
However, the XBox 360 has been very popular, even here in the heart of free software land, even though it's got more digital restrictions than an MPAA-approved download, and each and every sale funds the evil empire. It's all very weird. Perhaps people are still hoping it will eventually turn out to be as modifiable as the original XBox by some sort of TCPA-defeating miracle.
For some reason this was modded -1 Troll.
How in hell was that comment a Troll?
The Microsoft fanboys must have mod points today.
