Attempts to Count Linux Users Remain Pointless

An anonymous reader writes "A great deal of attention is paid to numbers, but rarely does one actually ask what these numbers mean. One problem that many people have been trying to tackle is gauging the extent of use of Free software, including Linux. Questionnaires are not a solution here and neither are statistics, which are usually derived from the wrong data. The following article looks at the various challenges at hand and concludes that the growth rate of Linux is likely to remain an enigma."

Your counting is mistaken. The count is of people who use Linux. If we were saying that two years ago, the count was at 5 then you could chime in and say, "I stopped using Linux" and then the count could now be assumed to be 4. But 2 people have posted that they use Linux. The fact that you don't use Linux is meaningless.

Use your head and think a little before you pipe in. Or did you just want to tell everyone how great you think Apple is? If that was the case, I apologize to myself for wasting my time on you.

There is no "FUD" required. Lunix on the desktop is stillborn: as a product, it's still chasing Windows 95's tail lights.

How many people download Ubunghole vs. how many actually use it? For example, I have two co-workers who decided they had too much time on their hands, and thought installing a "not quite ready for prime time" operating system was the solution. Both of them failed at getting Lunix installed, despite trying at least three different distros.

The amazing thing about it, from my point of view, that each distro failed at something completely different. One failed to set up the video, one failed to set up the network card, and another failed at something else, etc. And guess what Windows did on all of them? It "just worked". How boring.

How can anyone expect a non-tech to use Lunix? Just thinking such a thing is completely insane, and reveals just how separated from reality "the community" is.

Can you imagine what it would be like if a large organization tried using Lunix? What a complet and utter trainwreck that would be, where desktops may or may not work with the OS you are trying to standardize on? Either that, or you need to have support staff supporting several 'flavors' of Lunix. Just ask Munich, Germany: their Lunix fanboy folly has virtually shut their network down and destroyed two years of productivity.

Lunix vs. reality. Guess who wins? That's right... Microsoft does.

    STFU.

Your joke was stupid. It did not make any sense. You are not intelligent. You don't deserve to communicate with me. Your mother should have had an abortion. The noble thing for you to do now is to go walk into a bus.
